Gov. Jay Inslee has a knack for getting under the skin of Donald Trump, from his tongue-in-cheek 2016 proposal to build a wall to keep Trump out of Washington, to challenging Trump on arming school teachers during a governors meeting at the White House.
The Washington governor has skin in the game as Americans elect governors and members of Congress in this fall's mid-term elections.
Inslee heads the Democratic Governors Association, a past vehicle for Democratic presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton.
The post lets Inslee display his wares to the country, be it liberal bloggers at Net Roots Nation in New Orleans, or Iowa Democrats at a party dinner, or talking about gun violence in Las Vegas.
To what end?
Inslee has yet to appear on tout sheets of prospective 2020 Democratic nominees. He is, however, wowing the Democratic faithful with talk of how Washington has gone to court and gone to the mat against the Trump administration.
A veteran liberal Seattle blogger, David Goldstein, cites what focus groups have found about Inslee. He comes across like George W. Bush did 20 years ago, an avuncular, likable, funny guy with whom you could sit down and have a beer. (W. has been on the wagon for years.)
The hyperbole of Jay Inslee doesn't quite approach the language-mangling of George W. Bush, who referred to the Snake River as the "river on the Snake." In talking about champions of peace, however, Inslee did once mix up Indira Gandhi with Mahatma Gandhi.

(1,969 posts)I've watched him for years. I remember seeing him campaigning by himself during his first run for congress decades ago. I was impressed at the time with his intelligence and articulateness. (is "articulateness" a word? Anyway he is very clear speaking.)
He is smart, experienced with Washington DC, having spent years in congress. He has been an effective two term governor. He is both smart and down to earth. He is a pragmatic liberal and gets results.
