Pence used the word lodestar in a July interview

... whoever transcribed the interview misspelled it, but the usage is there

VP Pence on Kavanaugh, Trump-Putin Summit, Mike Flynn

PENCE: I don't believe it did in any way. What the President focused on was a judicial philosophy. What he focused on was a body of work by Judge Kavanaugh, and we examined other candidates who were finalists for this position to see if we could in that body of work determined that this was a judge who would faithfully uphold and interpret the constitution as written.

It really was the loadstar in the course of all of this. Now, look, make no mistake about it, Judge Kavanaugh -- he's a conservative jurist. He is a principal conservative in the tradition of Justice Scalia.

While I thought at first he was the author of the NYT piece, I am leaning toward Dan Coats or a group that includes him. Anonymous could have used that term deliberately to suggest Pence was anti trump and was the author of the NYT piece OR maybe the opposite reason - to show that Pence is part of that resistance group and that he "approved this message", I am not sure.

Like someone posted earlier, this is like an Agatha Christie novel or some made for tv movie...

My guess is that the author of the OpEd is the VP. Why? First, he is a coward and doesn't have the courage to come out publicly and speak the truth, but he wants to look good in history. Second, he cannot be fired by the President, but he may get impeached by his party if he came out publicaly with the repugs in control of Congress. Third, he might think that adding fuel to the fire now after the Bob Woodward book would get the President out, "one way or the other" and him in. I have heard that he believes that it is God's plan for him to be President.

They truly had to work hard at putting that word into the op-ed

Whereas, Pence would use it naturally...

Am thinking it is Pence

maintaining his adoring-acolyte pose at the shoulder of his leader until it's time to strike.

Pence is next in line for the presidency. I just see no reason why he would put himself in the position of usurping the power of the presidency and into the middle of a potential major legal brawl. No doubt he's well informed about what's been happening, and it's very possible his own agents are giving a nudge or suggestion here and there. But not him.

Of course, in this WH anything might happen. But still...
