First, golf clap. Half marks. You know what you're doing in service to Trump is morally indefensible, but you're trying to "But Gorsuch!" yourself out of the ethical hole.
2/ This tells me you at least have some vague survival instinct and know that you need a marker on the board for when the walls close in for the last time.
I want you to apply that survival instinct and look to the near future.
3/ Three things are coming, two of which you're sure. A) You know the system of subverting Trump you boasted about is marginal and unstable. Your wins were small, and now they're utterly over. B) You know Mueller is coming, November is coming, and all the easy days are over.
4/ C) Most importantly, you're going to get caught. I know. You were careful. The burner phone. The off-campus only contact. The careful opsec.
You're still going to be caught. It's ok. You should welcome it. It's your chance to do the *actual* right thing, finally.
5/ Before they bust you out, you need to build an exit message plan. You need to have a stack of stories. I know you do.
You need to go public, fast. Get into the daylight as quick as you can, not like Omarosa, but like a true whistleblower.
Now, here's the hard part.
6/ Your only value now is in pulling down the entire system.
First movers? Book deal. Last? "Welcome to Arby's."
The value of the tenth asshole from the WH who says, "I saw all this crazy, terrible, illegal, dangerous stuff and still tried to help" is exactly zero.
7/ No one in the WH will help you. No one there *can* help you.
The edifice is crumbling, the King is mad, and no amount of tweeting, no rally, no Fox filibuster will save it.
Run before they catch you. Tell it all. Save yourself, and help save the country. /end

(37,648 posts)He's 75 and doesn't care about a career at this point, according to Lawrence O'Donnell and an article I read that guessed at four possible people.
Coats hasn't done anything illegal, so no one is "coming for him." But he may get a book deal. Arby's? No...he'll be retiring.

(81,440 posts)Dan Coats has already climbed as high as hes gonna go, particularly at his age - in a campaign season more acutely aware of a candidates age than is ordinarily a factor.
And hes already proven hes not some fawning sycophant.

(8,684 posts)If its Coats i doubt he cares about his personal career... book or whatever. I think his motivation is fixing the problem.

(14,176 posts)And I bloody well hope that the NYT has a contingency plan ready to go if that ends up what it is.
Something was off in that statement about how they think Trump is doing a great job makin' America great again n all, they just don't like his personality.
What I suspect, but hope not, is that at some point Trump will come out and say they looked into everyone and have concluded that there is no leaker. That it was all fabricated by the NYT to deceitfully mislead the American public. They will be able to boldly state that because there actually WILL be no one to find. And whomever was that anonymous source will disappear (leave town), or just stay mum from then on.
And like the Dan Rather fiasco, the Times will never be able to prove it, even to themselves. At the very best it will feed the narrative that the 'fake news' is incompetent, or worse, it will prove to his base that he wasn't wrong about the 'fake news' out to get him unethically, and they will hope it will convince enough swaying Trumpists to come back to the fold for November, to defend their mad king.
And Rick Wilson is stepping right into it.
