Fraternities banned from serving their own hard alcohol after rules change

Most fraternities in the U.S. will no longer allow hard alcohol unless it is served by a licensed, third-party vendor, according to new rules from a national governing body.

The North-American Interfraternity Conference said fraternities have until Sept. 1, 2019 to prohibit alcohol products above 15 percent alcohol by volume served at chapter facilities or events unless they are served by a licensed and insured third-party vendor.

NIC counts among its membership large fraternal groups such as Alpha Phi Alpha, Alpha Tau Omega, Beta Theta Pi, Delta Chi, Delta Sigma Pi, Kappa Alpha Psi, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Alpha, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Sigma Chi.

The rules come after alcohol-related deaths last year of fraternity pledges at Penn State and LSU.
