Satanic Temple unveils giant 'Baphomet' statue at Arkansas State Capitol

In a rally at the Arkansas State Capitol this Thursday, religious conservatives got a lesson in what happens when they try to inject their influence in the public sphere.

In response to Arkansas lawmakers who approved the placement of a monument to the Ten Commandments on the Capitol grounds, The Satanic Temple showed up with dozens of people and unveiled their own monument — an 8-foot tall Baphomet statue.

The statue, meant as a First Amendment protest against the approval of a religious symbol on government property, will only be allowed to be displayed temporarily. But Temple members argue that it should be just as permanent as the Ten Commandments monument.

This reminds me of a couple of years ago when the Republican legislature & governor in Michigan installed a Nativity scene on the grounds of the State Capitol. It was soon followed by a display from the Pastafarians and the Satanic Church. The displays were epic.

This pisses me off to no end. I guess, to Republicans, some amendments are more equal than others.

Coeur d'Alene, ID, has a public art thing where sculptors can apply to install statues around the downtown area. Several years ago, someone put a Ganesha down here, and the serious fundamentalist Christians lost their minds. They had prayer vigils and fasts to try to get Jesus to blow up the Ganesha. (Didn't work.)

I figure if a relatively benign and friendly deity like Ganesha can cause the BTs to lose their shit the way this one did, think of what would happen if you installed a statue of the devil.
