Four years late but NBC finally, sort of, redeems itself for the Matt Mitcham mess in Beijing

Four years ago Matt Mitcham stunned the world by preventing a Chinese Gold medal sweep in diving on the last dive of the 10 m platform. Matt then went up and hugged his mom and his boyfriend. If you saw NBC's coverage in 08 you didn't see his embrace of his boyfriend nor did you hear anything about his being the first openly gay male to win a medal outside of dressage. Tonight, they did finally deign to tell the audience of both the fact he is gay and that of his struggles that nearly lead him to give up on diving in 06. Of course, NBC didn't use the word boyfriend, nor did they show the kiss but at least they told the audience that the best 10m diver of 2008 was a gay man. Now about spending the first half hour tonight on the dream team, yuck.

Had to point that out. Australia is trying to get some recognition in these games.

BTW his name is Matt Mitcham
