(10,839 posts)is so unexpected it seems downright weird. And yet . . . it seems absolutely genuine with affection and humor on both sides. I give Michelle Obama props. GW should cross himself every morning because she's making him look . . . likable.
Life is very strange!

(10,839 posts)I heard GW refer to Hillary being almost a sister-in-law. Maybe it has something to do about sharing the heady atmosphere and experience of the White House, all the things, they've seen, heard, lived through, etc.
The numbers are few and far between at the very top. A unique life experience.
That being said, I can't imagine any of them reaching out to the Trumpster when this is over. He's burned his bridges 10x over.

Referring specifically to being seated next to Cheney

Michelle has adopted George. The nation is grateful.
frick! Just saw Cheney.
The stench must have been unbearable! You're right! Hillary gets the ribbon for that effort. Hope she didn't have to hold the freak's hand.

(4,642 posts)Sec. Clinton would make an awesome president, but, we screwed that up and now must endure years, maybe decades of fascism.

(6,556 posts)when I was watching the funeral yesterday. It took a couple of camera passes to confirm that it was the "evil one". I blame a lot of GWB's actions on Cheney, who was actually running the presidency, much like Stephen Miller is running this administration. Condolences go to President Hillary Clinton for the sacrifice she made for the country.

(10,274 posts)Must have found him a pair of working legs that someone 'didn't want'.
And not for nuthin, but jr looks as ruddy and dry-drunk as Bannon in that pic...regardless of how he behaved otherwise toward Michelle.

(206,003 posts)there is a genuine mutual respect, friendship and common ground of values between the Bushes, Clintons and Obamas. I don't think we'll see the same once Trump is out of office.

(31,261 posts)Someone said that he is a pretty accomplished amateur painter.
Does anyone know whether Trump has commissioned the official White House portraits of the former President and First Lady? President Obama did that for the Bushes early on in his first term.
PatSeg
(47,586 posts)I like his paintings. Perhaps he should have taken up painting instead of politics a long time ago.
I hadn't heard anything about the official White House portraits, but I wouldn't hold my breath.
Blue_true
(31,261 posts)But you are right, Trump is garbage, it likely will be left to 46 to do the Obama portraits and those for Trump (even if impeached, I think that he still get that honor if he wants it. Someone correct me if that is wrong).

(37,648 posts)I think they knew what they were getting into, up to a point. But I'd be surprised if they knew how horrible the alt-righters were and that they'd be so venomous toward the First Lady...for nothing. Just out of hate. She held up well. She's tough and deserves her post-political days in the sun.

(10,173 posts)Being President is a lonely, isolating experience. It's normal for Presidents to reach out to their predecessors, particularly in their first year. They do so for insight and commiseration.
The isolation of the Oval Office leads to the kind of aloofness Presidents typically have in their second terms as well and I think their mutual relationships, which transcends ideology, provides some unique insight into the frailty of leadership.
Trump probably feels particularly isolated, in light of this, and it feeds his paranoia. He can't call on former Presidents, he's a grade A self-absorbed narcissist so can't take criticism in stride. All he's got is fox and friends.
