Running as a progressive and as the state's first black gubernatorial nominee, Gillum, 39, currently serves as Tallahassee's mayor. He's received the support of national progressive like U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont. He's trumpeting is support for raising the minimum hourly wage to $15, legalizing marijuana and universal health care. He is also a staunch advocate of impeaching Trump and abolishing the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, even though as governor he does not have much of a say on those two things.
Top contenders for his lieutenant governor are:
Lauren Book
The Plantation Democrat was elected to the Florida Senate in 2016 and has been a fierce advocate of protecting victims of human trafficking and child abuse. At times, however, the daughter of prominent lobbyist Ron Book has angered progressives in her party for voting in favor Republican-leaning business interests. She was instrumental in bringing the Marjory Stoneman Douglas students to Tallahassee to speak to legislative leaders and was a key lawmaker who advocated for school safety measures in the aftermath of the Parkland school shooting that left 17 dead.
"If an offer was made to join Mayor Gillum in this momentous time, it would be an honor," Book said.

In 2014, the Coconut Creek Democrat was elected to serve in the Florida House after campaigning on a platform built on how to combat climate change. President Barack Obama also invited her to be a member of his State, Local, and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience.
Melissa McKinlay
The Palm Beach County Mayor has been outspoken on the need to combat opioid abuse and has spent nearly 20 years working on behalf of women, children and families as a legislative aide to the Palm Beach County Legislative Affairs Office to members of Congress and the U.S. Senate.

(58,785 posts)former Fort Lauderdale mayor: "Broward County is vital to all Democrats and Seiler, a former state legislator, would add state-level experience that Gillum lacks."
Gwen Graham is also discussed, pointing out though that she's from Tallahassee like Gillum.
Btw, Jonathan Capehart has a very good opinion piece in the WaPo today that describes Gillum's belief in the way Democrats can win and may suggest a direction for this choice. Also Joan Walsh's article in The Nation.
