His concession speech was majestic:
He even mentions TR inviting Booker T Washington to the White House. TR got so much grief from quarters in the north and south that an African American wasn't invited to the White House for another thirty years.

(102,405 posts)None of us would ever have voted for him, but we've lost this sense of decency in defeat--at least among Republicans. I surely hope it is not gone forever.

(6,831 posts)through the hypocritical blather of Pence, McConnell and Ryan, I look forward to listening to one man of character and integrity eulogize another. I'm sure it will be one for the history books.

The guests, friends of his, extolled his sense of fair play. He would battle tooth and nail to advance his right-wing positions on the floor of the Senate and then at the end of the day he would sit across from his political adversaries in a restaurant and a bar and put that all aside, often telling others how he respected and admired these individuals despite their political differences.
And yet he couldn't find it in his heart to let Trumpy attend his funeral. Dolt 45 wasn't welcome at Barbara Bush's funeral either. Very telling. Just can't picture this group with that horse's ass plunked in there:

(10,274 posts)And the smarts of Schmidt and the Honor of McCain made damn-sure that didn't happen.
If it had, I predict it would have been HER in the white house today. Trump is bad cause he's greedy.
Palin would have been worse by far cause she's CHRISTIAN greedy.
(ON EDIT) I like that Melania is included in that group; every time she's been around barrack and michelle she seems a completely different person (I suspect it's because they treat her like an actual human being, rather than a piece of decoration like her husband, and I think her appreciation of that comes through. I hope she finds a way to take ALL his money, and do Good Works with it).

And correctly told her to fuck RIGHT off.

(6,831 posts)about how Palin behaved as the #2 on the ticket. She routinely disregarded his instructions and outright disrespected him.
When McCain decided near the end not to go to Wisconsin one more time, she lobbied him go let her go by herself. He firmly told her "No" that the campaign was not going to do another lap in Wisconsin. The next morning, she has her staff boarding the bus and she informs the Secret Service that despite John's orders, SHE is going to Wisconsin whether he likes it or not. They call McCain and ask him what to do. McCain replies, "Shoot out the tires."

(89,276 posts)the joke she was and deserved.
Trump deserved that treatment even more but didn't get it because of white male privilege.

(10,274 posts)was the very last of the Republicans who really did believe that you should win on the merits of the argument , and if the voting majority rejected that argument, then so it was and so be it. He knew how to lose (and do it honorably) and he should be recognized for that by us I think.

(6,831 posts)But in the end, if the vote went against him,, he accepted it graciously and moved forward.
There are no more John McCains in the Senate, and the republican party is officially dead.

(17,337 posts)It's rare these days that we see politicians together from both sides of the aisle getting along. Even though most of the people in that pictures are "retired," they still provide more hope and inspiration than the goblin who "leads" the country now.

(143 posts)...when she performed at a corporate event at the then Santa Barbara Biltmore. I was the producer at the event for around 180 attendees. Her rider was very modest but included lots of premium dark alcohol.
I had no idea who she was but after 25 years of dealing with celebs in the business and looking back, her and her group was very easy to please.
I operated the spotlight, sound board and house lights and had no rehearsal.
I went to their 'green room' 30 mins before the show to get direction. She said that the end of the show would be obvious to me and to tighten the spot on her face with a bastard amber filter and shrink it into null. Then she wanted the stage to be washed in bastard amber.
Lovely lady and band members who were very kind and generous to all of the hotels service personnel.
A forever memory that I have along with sticking my hand up the back of Heather Locklear's wedding dress (while she was in it) to place a lavalier mic for the sound and video system when she married Tommy Lee.

(10,274 posts)It's on the opposite side of the USA TODAY announcement of Obamas victory from Obamas Yes We Can speech.
It's under glass because he meant every word and it was the best public address of the mans career.
The boos from the crowd in that clip are the people who brought us the tea-party, and pResident DONALD FUCKING TRUMP 8 years later. And while the blame for that CAN be laid at the feet of McCain, it was mostly Sarah Palins doing.

There were many things about which I disagreed with John McCain, but despite the anguish here on DU he was a great American who cared more about the country than 90% of those in Washington today.
