Edited to add...Yikes...Didn't even notice I did that and so dislike when others, especially Cons, do it. He said it correctly, I wrote it incorrectly

(82,849 posts)Saves the smear merchants the trouble of having to show up for a panel discussion. If he has DeSantis on, will chucktodd run down the list of racist things DeSantis has said and endorsed and ask him about his ties to racists? Or would that be impolite?
Gillum just has to endorse the party platform, and come out in favor of any number of very popular Democratic positions on the issues. But you wouldn't know that by listening to the political geniuses who dominate our public discourse. Instead, we're treated to questions about ties to socialism (which actually polls pretty well among the younger voters). How about some questions on climate change or worker pay and their right to organize, chucktodd?

(93 posts)looked like he did a really good job. He was plain spoken enough that even the knuckleheads could agree with what he was saying. I really liked when he said Florida has to stop being a cheap date and making big business pay. (when asked if he would create an income tax) That's going to be a big one for the Cons, claiming he's going to tax people, when that's not his plan. His plan is to stop giving the state away to big moneyed business

(37,648 posts)Chuck Todd is an excellent interviewer. People slide things by him sometimes, but for the most part, he doesn't let evasive answers or weirdness get by him. Like his response to Ghouliani's "truth is not truth" answer to a question. Ghouliani moved on, but Todd stopped him in mid-sentence with "wait..wait..truth is truth.."
I like Meet the Press to be balanced. The purpose of that show is different from the MSNBC prime time lineup, which is also excellent. And I do want Todd to ask controversial or hard questions to all guests.

(108,980 posts)Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum will be on Team Hillary when Democrats meet this summer to pick their presidential nominee.
Gillum was selected during a party gathering Saturday in Orlando as one of Hillary Clinton's delegates to the Democratic National Convention, set for July 25-28 in Philadelphia.
The former secretary of state got nearly two-thirds of the vote and a corresponding chunk of delegates when she scored a decisive victory over rival Bernie Sanders in Florida's March primary. The mayor campaigned for her in Tallahassee and elsewhere, including South Carolina, an important early primary state.
"It is a real honor to be selected as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention for Secretary Clinton," Gillum said. "I am looking forward to enthusiastically casting a vote for the candidate that is the most qualified to be president and the one who has a concrete plan to continue the progress of President Obama's administration."

(37,648 posts)If that's what he said. The latter is a sarcastic slang the Repubs started using a few years ago.
We have a "Democratic Party Platform."
Nancy Pelosi is the "Democratic Leader" in the House of Rep (see her twitter acct)
I hate to see the Republicans succeed in changing our party name to their sarcastic slur (what they intended as a slur). They don't like that our party uses the word "Democratic."

(23,423 posts)Gillums support from Bernie Sanders, a Democratic socialist, was questioned.
These labels are insignificant when it comes to everyday life of people in the state
Im a Democrat and an individual who believes people have had a rough ride in this state
these labels are easy to throw on folks, Gillum said, but mean nothing.
Gillum also described himself as the most qualified candidate in the race, given his tenure in Tallahassee, noting that business experience doesnt equate to governing aptitude.
Gillum went on to invoke a Koch Brothers study that said Medicare for All would save the health care system money, saying that Medicaid expansion would be an immediate priority, were he to be elected.

(72 posts)and hadnt heard of (noticed) Gullim before last night; and was initially happy with the whole underdog winning the nomination. But as they talked about some of his stances on some issues, and the history of Democrats winning the Governorship here I felt like he would probably lose. And Im the same Black guy who voted for Hillary in the 2008 primaries because I didnt think a Black guy had a chance in Hell of becoming President. But then this morning when I was making a delivery to someone who Ive never talked politics with came at me all excited and getty about Gillim winning. She asked me if I voted yesterday (I didnt) and then said she couldnt wait until November. She said he would win. So now Im looking at how he could galvanize so many to come out like Obama did.

(6,855 posts)I voted for Levine but there is something great about a 39 year old candidate. He is the future. Weve needed new blood and its great to have it.
I really really like how he does not mince words. He doesnt kowtow to gun owners and he says certain guns should be off the streets. Hes for expanding Medicaid and plainly tells everyone that the state loses money because Florida did not expand Medicaid. He has a sharp, to the point message. Like an accountant with charisma. He will be great at the top of the ticket.

It looks like Gillum used the correct party name "Democratic Party." It's the OP who used the wrong word. (But a member of the Democratic Party is a "Democrat.)
Ms. Toad
(34,076 posts)A Democratic candidate for office (,ay have) got(ten) it wrong.
And at least one person on DU knows there's something wrong with "Democrat," but not actually what is wrong.
Perhaps another quoted Gillum incorrectly - either in an attempt to correct him, or because they don't understand which is correct, or that it makes a difference.
I grew up with good Democrats, 5 decades ago, who called the party they belonged to the Democrat Party. To be grammatically correct, it should be the Democratic Party - but the meaning is clear, even if the party is referred to as the Democrat party. There are lots of people on our side who grew up using the wrong word for decades, (long before the current hypersensitivity because Republican jerks discovered how easy it was to yank our chain).

(658 posts)Say Bernie.
If Bernie Sanders hadn't endorsed him, he would have been vilified for not having endorsed him. But since he did endorse Andrew Gillum, a man that I voted for in the primaries - early - before Bernie endorsed him and when he was an extreme underdog, Bernie is somehow being vilified. Not sure why.
Both Andrew Gillum and Bernie Sanders support an agenda that makes sense for this country, and the state that I live in. How is that a bad thing? I'm not going to argue anything else. Just that point.
mac2766
(658 posts)But I believe the anti-Bernie opinions do far more harm than good. Bernie Sanders promotes an agenda that makes sense for our country. What made America great were the laws that were passed after WWII and the great depression by a great Democrat. If we all took a hard look at just what FDR did for our country, and compared the agenda being promoted by Bernie Sanders, and by candidates like Andrew Gillum, we'd see that the two agendas are very similar. The separation that is being generated by the anti-Bernie folks just makes me sad.
Just for the record. I proudly voted for Bernie Sanders in the primaries. I proudly cast my vote for Hillary Clinton in the general election. I will again vote for Bernie - proudly - if he runs again in 2020, but if he loses the nomination, I'll cast my vote for whomever is nominated as a Democrat.
Go Andrew Gillum!!!

(658 posts)the fact that you are taking offense to the fact that he mis-used a word?
I'm really sorry that I have to ask this question. It blows me away what people are offended by today.
Can't we just enjoy the fact that a candidate has been nominated that we can all agree to be a perfect example of one that we want to have running as a Democrat? And he is.
Unless I die before the election. I will vote for him. A second time.
Oh yes. I need to mention... If Bernie runs again in 2020, I will proudly vote for him. Again.

and Cuomo was asking him about the cost of Medicare 4 All. This is what I was thinking would happen, where the other supporters will be forced to answer questions about the cost of Medicare for All while others get a total pass for years without having to answer the hard questions. Gillum was asked why Vermont passed on it and he had to answer that it was too expensive. Gillum stated that it is too expensive even for his state and it would have to be a coalition of states. This is the kind of thing that someone else should be taking the heat for and answering for so that other supporters don't get left holding the bag with these questions.

(10,833 posts)stood politically was clear, definitive and unapologetic. He's a Democrat with governing experience and has expressed his eagerness to expand Medicaid as a first step, begin improving Florida's growing environmental problems and improve educational opportunities for Florida's kids. He's also taken a strong stance on gun regulation.
As with O'Rourke in Texas, he sounds like a man who will not back down from his positions--state the positions clearly, defend them calmly with respect and carry on. We need more of this because it explodes the Republican framing strategy--defining our candidates before they can define themselves.
Sounds like a sound Democrat to me who has energized the race with an unexpected win. I'm not a Floridian so I can't cast a vote. But I certainly would if I could.

(19,565 posts)When Julian Castro endorsed him I took a closer look, even though he's not in my state, which makes it not my race to butt into but I wanted to know what one of my favorite Castro brothers saw in him. It was obvious to me he had potential to grow in the Democratic Party and his policy and manner could work in the complicated electorate of Florida. I'm happy to see he won.
After his win I've been listening to him more and he reminds me a lot of Beto. Who is in my state and also amazing, articulate and another rising star, unless I miss my bet. It'll be a happy day if they both can manage to flip their seats in November!
