U.S. is denying passports to Americans along the border, throwing their citizenship into question

What in the holy hell?!?!

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/the_americas/us-is-denying-passports-to-americans-along-the-border-throwing-their-citizenship-into-question/2018/08/29/1d630e84-a0da-11e8-a3dd-2a1991f075d5_story.html?utm_term=.728858ea04c7

His official American birth certificate shows he was delivered by a midwife in Brownsville, at the southern tip of Texas. He spent his life wearing American uniforms: three years as a private in the Army, then as a cadet in the Border Patrol and now as a state prison guard.

But when Juan, 40, applied to renew his U.S. passport this year, the government’s response floored him. In a letter, the State Department said it didn’t believe he was an American citizen.

As he would later learn, Juan is one of a growing number of people whose official birth records show they were born in the United States but who are now being denied passports — their citizenship suddenly thrown into question. The Trump administration is accusing hundreds, and possibly thousands, of Hispanics along the border of using fraudulent birth certificates since they were babies, and it is undertaking a widespread crackdown on their citizenship.....

...It’s difficult to know where the crackdown fits into the Trump administration’s broader assaults on legal and illegal immigration. Over the past year, it has thrown legal permanent residents out of the military and formed a denaturalization task force that tries to identify people who might have lied on decades-old citizenship applications.....

Showing up at someone's house to confiscate their passport?

I had a hard time picking the paragraphs to include in this post. There is way more to be disgusted with in the full article. I'm just appalled that anyone would go along with this hate cloaked in "national security." You nailed that!

In quotes because, frankly, it seems more like a crime than a policy.

Trump and his goons are basically trying to round up brown people and where they can't detain them, they're deporting them.

Along with stealing their children.

Matters not about their actual citizenship status.

Question, examine, and deny valid citizenship then prosecute if these ( "non-citizens" ) have the audacity to vote in municipal, state or federal elections.

Can't win elections fairly, getting real desperate, strip as many voter off the voting roles as possible before 2018 & 2020.

Who was the master mind of this Fascist ploy - Kris Kobach ?

No it's not: deny citizenship, and you deny the right to vote.

Sounds like a (Republican) plan.

So he's keeping them out -- even those who are applying legally (asylum seekers) -- and kicking out people who are here legally and have jumped through the hoops to become American citizens. Any guesses how many of these people are white?

Just what I know is enough that he should not have been granted citizenship due to his criminal record. Guess the fact that he is "white" plays a greater role than his criminal history in the tRump administration.

The same midwives who provided fraudulent birth certificates also delivered thousands of babies legally in the United States. It has proved nearly impossible to distinguish between legitimate and illegitimate documents, all of them officially issued by the state of Texas decades ago.

Dear Dump Admin: Let it go! The babies certainly are not responsible for any crimes done decades ago. Get the fuck over it and, how rich of you to continuously cry over "witch hunts" when you're doing shit like this! Disgusting!

The denials are happening at a time when Trump has been lobbying for stricter federal voter identification rules, which would presumably affect the same people who are now being denied passports — almost all of them Hispanic, living in a heavily Democratic sliver of Texas.

“That’s where it gets scary,” Diez said.

For now, passport applicants who are able to afford the legal costs are suing the federal government over their passport denials. Eventually, the applicants typically win those cases, after government attorneys raise a series of sometimes bizarre questions about their birth.

“For a while, we had attorneys asking the same question: ‘Do you remember when you were born?’ ” Diez said. “I had to promise my clients that it wasn’t a trick question.”

Anyone want to wager a guess why this policy came about?

I'll give you a hint........ who has been having a big sulking hissy fit for the last decade because he told us all the Obama's birth certificate was FAKE and no one would listen and throw Obama out of office? THAT is what this is about!

This is CRIMINAL. The burden of proof is on the government to prove the certificates are FAKE. They are basing this on NOTHING other than names. "Juan". Yeah i bet if "Dennis" from the same town sent in his request no one would blink. This is target abuse based on ethnicity and these people should be granted damages by a judge for what they are suffering in wasted time, terror, and humiliation.

both parents were born in the U.S.

The man in the OP doesn't have an official hospital birth record. It's a midwife attestation, I guess. I'm guessing that's the problem. And his parents aren't proven citizens, maybe (that'd be my guess).

So it's a very different situation.

(Ted Cruz was born in Canada to U S citizen parents. You can be born anywhere, as long as your parents were married, citizens, and one of them resided in the U S before you were born.)

But you can't be President!

I don't have a U.S birth certificate....so maybe not.

Funny story: Both me and my older brother were born in Munich. Sometime after I was born, my Dad went to register the births with the State Department at the U.S. Consulate. When he came back with the paper work, he handed them to my Mom for safe-keeping and basically said: Your two sons are now U.S. Citizens but can never be President. My Mom responded with a very disappointed Oh no.

This must be challenged in federal court, and I'm sure the judge will listen and rule correctly.
Anyone with a valid US birth certificate cannot be denied a passport, or voting rights.
