General election deficits are extremely difficult to overcome in the late going. There are very few swing and undecided voters. It does not resemble primary dynamics at all.

Nelson slept and allowed his approval rating to tank under attack while Scott's approval ratings steadily climbed.

The Hillary/Trump example means nothing. You never want to trail entering the fall campaign.

The good news for Nelson is the tilt of the nation favors him, along with incumbency. I haven't given up on this but Nelson's campaign has been an unforced error so far.

Now Nelson has a warchest he hasnt touched that will likely prove to be superior to Scotts resources. Also he is a far more lokable candidate than scott in any respect.

I suspect Nelson will live and die by the effect of Gillum on turn out. If he causes it to rise significant, it could save Nelson, and create some swings in down ticket races.
