30. My SIL was born and raised in South Texas.

Her maiden name is "Gonzales". Unfortunately, she and my niece and nephew have some harrowing stories about strangers telling them to "go back" to wherever they "came from." Her brother and his kids, whose last names are still Gonzales, get it even worse.

I once had a very interesting talk with her about her family's heritage, and about the morons who confront them. It turns out she can trace her ancestors, who have lived just north of the Rio Grande for many generations, to before--in fact long before--Texas' entry into the U.S. in 1846. I'm guessing a lot of the idiots who tell her to go back "home" have no such strong connection to the land on which they stand when they issue such an imbecilic directive.

The story of the disputes between the U.S. and Mexico, including the years when Texas was an independent republic, are numerous and long, but they all convey the ambitions of the U.S. to grab as much of the land south of the Nueces River as possible, even, for a time, wanting to extend the southern border as far south as to include Mexico City.

My SIL knows her Texas history, but rarely flaunts it in the face of stupid racists, knowing how useless it would be. But the irony is clear. The U.S. was anxious to annex as much of what is now Mexico as possible. So when idiots tell my lovely and wicked smart SIL to "go home" she knows, even if they don't, that she is vastly more at home in South Texas than they will ever be.

well, ok, yeah, stupid is a key component of white supremacy....

point is i don't think it's really about any notion that this bigot thinks or cares at all about where native americans come from or belong.

"illegal", in white supremacist code, doesn't really refer to proper documentation under immigration law -- that's just the cover.
"illegal", in white supremacist code really means that *being non-white* makes you a lesser human, if human at all.

it's his race/skin color that's illegal, to the white supremacists.

"here illegally" is setting the stage for removal or extermination of non-whites.

we can call it stupid, but we can't dismiss it. it's not a harmless mistake.

Non-Horse culture Native Americans get an extra dose of prejudice to go with it. They don't fit the stereotype of "Indian" (sorry), so the connection between who they are and why they are here is ignored.

They were brought to the Western Hemisphere by the Spanish, and were subsequently adopted and used by many Native American tribes.

The immigration issue is typically about people's desire to question those not like them. It generally has little to do with actual illegal immigration or law enforcement. It has to do with people wanting a free license to harass everyone they don't like under the excuse of law enforcement. (see our drug laws as well).

by my then congresswoman, Gabby Giffords, in Douglas AZ.

There were a bunch of protesters there from the TEA Party... mostly bused in by somebody or other.

Anyway the TEA party assholes would complain loudly about any of the Hispanic people waiting in line to meet with Ms. Giffords with things like "Go back to Mexico" and "wetbacks" and other slurs. One elderly Hispanic man commented to me that his family had been on the same exact ranch for 7 generations... and it wasn't that he had left Mexico... Mexico left him (The US took the property that his ranch was on in the Gadsden Purchase) in 1854.

The stupid really is strong with these TEA Party idiots.

Will they do the same for American born non-whites? Should I get packing to go back home to where my parents live? I'm sure they'd like to see me more often. It's still in the USA though to the disappointment of many racists.
