Thousands of bees swarmed this Times Square hot dog stand

New York (CNN)Times Square was a hive of activity Tuesday afternoon, as more than 40,000 bees swarmed a hot dog stand at the corner of Broadway and West 43rd Street.
Known as an absconded hive, the bees were looking for a new home to escape the sweltering heat, said Officer Darren Mays, one of the New York Police Department's two official beekeepers.
"The hive got overcrowded because it was hot and humid and they just needed a new place to go so they can keep cool," Mays said. He also runs the official NYPD Bees Twitter account, which was buzzing with likes and retweets as many New Yorkers learned that their police force had beekeepers on staff.
........................
Second-beekeeper-in-command, Officer Michael Lauriano, responded to the scene in full protective gear, including a netted bee helmet. It took Lauriano 45 minutes to carefully vacuum the bees. The street was cordoned off and no injuries were reported, according to the NYPD.

(36,444 posts)THAT is a HUGE swarm! That being said, I have ZERO experience with bees that have absconded, and might even be timid if they weren't totally docile like a spring swarm.
A swarm in May is worth a load of hay; a swarm in June is worth a silver spoon; but a swarm in July is not worth a fly

(36,444 posts)and it costs money to feed them over the winter. Out in California, my girls were busy year round as long as it gets above 55 degrees; eucalyptus trees bloom during the winter, and provided ample food.

Here's a short article on P.O. Darren Mays removing a Manhattan swarm earlier in the summer. He's the senior beekeeper.

Amazed by the small vacuums they use. I've never seen that before.

I still haven't forgiven bees.
Here it is. It died after stinging me and fell out of my ear.

(10,832 posts)Your description made me wince. That must have hurt like . . . well, you know what. The worst sting I've had was a hornet that caught me on my hand, right in a vein. Felt like acid traveling right up my arm. Next morning, my hand looked like a lobster claw. Needed antibiotics for that sting.
But inside your ear. Eeek!!

(10,832 posts)imagining the noise makes me cringe. And the very idea of something alive inside my ear. Too much like a horror flick.
But at least you got a free examination cup out of the experience.

I Googled Sabrett and didn't see it.
For me, Gog was a creepy 50's sci-fi movie with robots.
