John McCains former Vietnamese jailer gives him the heartfelt tribute that Trump has refused to offer
President Donald Trump over the weekend reportedly blocked his own White House from issuing an official statement praising the life of the late Sen. John McCain.
Even as the president refused to directly praise the late senator, however, tributes to McCain from around the world continued pouring in including from one of the men who held him captive while he was a prisoner of war in Vietnam.
Via the Daily Beast, Vietnam News spoke with Colonel Trần Trọng Duyệt, the man who ran the Hỏa Lò Prison where McCain was held.
In addition to praising McCain for his bravery and toughness as a soldier, Duyệt also gave credit to McCain for working to normalize relations between the United States and Vietnam after Americas eventual defeat in the war.
At that time I liked him personally for his toughness and strong stance, he said. Later on, when he became a US Senator, he and Senator John Kerry greatly contributed to promote Vietnam-U.S. relations so I was very fond of him. When I learnt about his death early this morning, I feel very sad. I would like to send condolences to his family. I think its the same feeling for all Vietnamese people as he has greatly contributed to the development of Vietnam-U.S. relations.

(6,918 posts)To love the game beyond the prize.
To honor while you strike him down,
The foe that comes with fearless eyes.
To find the battle of life good,
And dear the land that gave you birth.
And dearer yet, the brotherhood,
That binds the brave of all the Earth.
Of course, "sisterhood:, too, or "personhood". But this is h ow the poem is written.
The point, McCain has more in common with his jailer than Trump.

(8,311 posts)... fit this wonderful lady beautifully.
So before I read it, I said, "I briefly considered changing the gender in this poem, but I knew Kitty would come back for the sole purpose of smacking me upside the head for ruining the meter just because she was a woman. So, not desiring a smack from beyond the grave..."
It made them laugh because it was true, she was an English major and likely would have!

(2,351 posts)Looked it up and it was a pre WWI British propaganda effort. Newbolt, the author, worked at the Ministry of Information.
It seems to fit McCain, especially the brotherhood part.

(27,813 posts)I will never, ever apologize for the fact that we nominated Gore, then Kerry, and then Hillary when we did. They'd all have made fantastic presidents, and this country and the world would be far, far better if they'd been elected, or allowed to assume the office they would have won without suppression, manipulation, rigging, and theft.
