(58,785 posts)be too distracted over staff using personal email accounts to be concerned about widespread corruption and seriously questionable actions among appointees? Glad they're worried about Mnuchin, but how about at least Wilbur Ross? And others.
For instance, we really need to take a look at Rex Tillerson and the very severe, and highly questionable damage he did to the State Department. He was a competent administrator right up to the day he became SoS, then he wasn't. During his short period of power he severely damaged the State Department's ability to carry out its functions around the planet. When we hear a pit bull attacked and turned an entire sofa into astonishing piles of useless debris we feel we sort of understand why. What Tillerson did doesn't make that much sense, and neither does the time-honored (and way overused) explanation of previously unsuspected incompetence used to protect high-level criminals.
At the time Tillerson was named he, and Exxon, had huge conflicts of interests. Exxon had many billions of investment dollars and future returns blocked on its investment in Russian oil by U.S. sanctions. Tillerson personally held stock in that investment, its value seriously depressed to only $151M by the sanctions. And there are others.
The sanctions weren't lifted while Tillerson was in office, of course. Who knows how many billions Putin has tied up in that one oil deal alone, but it's still tied up, and the U.S. is still causing Russia problems. Since Trump delivered Tillerson's 'you're fired!," Putin doesn't like Tillerson any more either and says he regrets giving him Russia's highest Order of Friendship medal for foreigners who've helped Russia.
