Senator McCain. Like almost everyone here, I always opposed his political positions. However, his service to the country, both as a Navy officer and as a long-time Senator cannot be ignored. One can hold political views that I will fight against, but serve honorably, based on political beliefs that are opposite to mine.
We have two major political parties in the United States. They are quite different. The nation is roughly evenly divided between those parties, which causes considerable movement back and forth on many issues. I'd rather that weren't the case, but it is. Still, John McCain stood up and cast the last and decisive vote against shutting down the ACA. He did not do that because he thought it was a good law, but because he did not want to take away what was left of it, leaving millions of Americans with no alternative.
So, today, I am simply honoring his service. I can do no less. He is gone, and I will not speak ill of him today.

I agree with all you said Mineral Man.... I feel the same way and I will also remember when during the campaign he corrected that woman who called Obama an Arab and other times he respectfully defended him. I will also remember his action on the ACA. Always.

(81,585 posts)"To say that the accusations made in both documents are not substantiated by the evidence they offer is to be overly polite and diplomatic about it. It is far better, and more accurate, to talk straight: These allegations about Huma, and the report from which they are drawn, are nothing less than an unwarranted and unfounded attack on an honorable citizen, a dedicated American, and a loyal public servant. ..."
"I have every confidence in Huma's loyalty to our country, and everyone else should as well. All Americans owe Huma a debt of gratitude for her many years of superior public service. I hope these ugly and unfortunate attacks on her can be immediately brought to an end and put behind us before any further damage is done to a woman, an American, of genuine patriotism and love of country."

I honor that and I grieve its loss. Our country, our world is a far worse place without examples like McCain and I fear for our future.
RIP, John. You angered me, you frustrated me, but in the end, looking at the entirety of your life and career, I salute you.

(5,813 posts)But now is not the time to revisit them. Today, and the days following his passing, should be reserved to honor his service. There will be plenty of time to critique his entire life story later on but these few days can and should be devoted to memorials. It is the kind and decent thing to do and we need more of that these days.

(226 posts)I remember the look on McConnell's face when McCain stood in front of him and plunged his thumb down during the vote.
He had his ups and downs, but I think his heart was in the right place.

These last few months have shown a real graciousness and gratitude for the life he made.
That I can respect; and wish him well on his journey.

(37,648 posts)I think he was an honorable, ethical man...to the extent that any of us is honorable and ethical. I did not agree with him ideologically, but he was a normal Republican, not part of the alt-right extremists (formerly called the Tea Party).
Establishment Republicans and establishment Democrats have a long history of working together on issues and compromising. Each side serves as a sort of checks and balances on the other side, preventing extreme laws from being passed. This can be bad or good, but whichever it is, that is how government in a democracy operates. McCain was willing to work with Democrats and compromise at times. He counted Democrats among his personal friends.
Besides that, he was a family man and loved his family more than anything, and I believe he loved America, including its ideals. (Although I have a memory that McCain left his first wife for Cindy? I'm fuzzy on that.)
Anyway, he lived a good life and died with his honorable reputation intact. He made mistakes, like we all have. But overall, a good guy with good intentions.

(146,331 posts)I was never in harm's way, as McCain was. But I did voluntarily serve in the military during the Vietnam war. It was not a hardship for me, as it was for so many others, but the military decided where to send me and what I should do. My bravery was never tested.

(90,794 posts)In the heat of election cycles I participated in bashing McCain -- but he never would. And now I too lay down that political fight, remember the ways in which he was a good man and a patriot, and leave the rest to history.
RIP, Senator, and thanks for your service.

For now we mourn a veteran, family man and a United States Senator.
For those who deride him, what have you done with YOUR life that comes close to his resume?
I only hope tRump doesn't interfere with his lying in state in the Capitol. We veterans would not take kindly to such disrespect!

(81,467 posts)Anyone who was around during the 2008 campaign or earlier has already pointed out whatever mistakes or flaws or issues or whatever, with which they found fault - regarding this VERY human and yet strong and courageous and noble American. I'm certainly no exception. But it grew harder and harder to stay with those feelings as time passed, and John McCain's behavior repeatedly showed the measure of the man. We who didn't know him from his Arizona world could see who and what he was as time passed, especially through the Obama years up til now.
His behavior proved him to be a really classy guy. Patriotic and loyal - to the country and the Constitution. Steadfast. Strong. Able to withstand some seriously ungodly stuff back at the Hanoi Hilton and even after that as he tried to recover.
A remarkable man. Total class. Selfless service. Imperfect, yes, but hell - aren't we all? He left a record ANYONE would be proud to have - any public servant, OR civilian. He'll always cast a giant shadow. And donald trump will NEVER be worthy even to touch the hem of his pants leg.
Frankly, I find myself wondering if John McCain's final gift to America is to wake a few more people up - about what greatness REALLY is, in HIGH contrast to what trump keeps on telling them. The comparison cannot be avoided OR overstated, even by those in denial. It's a HUGE crater that I suspect at least a few of them will have BIG trouble trying to step over.

(146,331 posts)It's one thing to disagree on policy issues. It's another to attack the person in a general way. Now, I do make exceptions. I can find no redeeming values in someone like Donald Trump, for example. In general, he deserves attack.
We've moved into another phase in this country, I think - A phase where there are no subtleties. Personally, I don't find that to be a good thing.

(5,637 posts)I also served in the Vietnam era, but never went there (Destroyer USS Sampson, DDG 10). I served honorably during a conflict I didn't agree with, and was never in the line of fire. Senator McCain served honorably and paid dearly for his service. This veteran honors his service.
