BY ALEXANDER BOLTON - 08/26/18 06:00 AM EDT
Republicans are divided over whether President Trumps escalating legal problems pose a major threat to their Senate and House majorities in November.
The emerging consensus is that the House GOP is likely to bear the brunt of the damage as the party seeks to defend 25 seats carried by Hillary Clinton in 2016, while Democrats need to flip 23 to capture the lower chamber.
But some Republicans say one legal issue in particular is shaping up to be a broader political challenge for the GOP: former Trump lawyer Michael Cohens claim that the president directed him to pay hush money to two women during the 2016 campaign.
For the base, the hardcore base, I dont know that it matters that much, but it certainly swings independents and those who have second thoughts along the way. You got to think that, Sen. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), one of the presidents loudest GOP critics, said when asked what impact Cohens recent plea deal and the fraud conviction of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort would have on midterm races. This is serious, added Flake, whos retiring in early January.
Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) warned, Its not helpful to Republicans.
Its just one more narrative of people around the president doing bad things, he said. The economy is strong. Well have our side of the story. But I dont think you have to be a political genius to understand stuff like that.

(15,543 posts)1. But honest, decent American citizens are united
in their rejection of the disgraceful and traitorous way republicans have acted again and again to divide the nation, to enrich the already rich, to piss on the poor, elderly, and disabled -- and to weaken US security by steadily attacking the honor and credibility all 17 US Intelligence agencies which are by and large staffed with honorable US military veterans, and by submissively ASSUMING THE POSITION for Dirty Donny, the deceitful Draft-Dodging republican Casino Hustler.
Americans are united in their disgust for lowlife, unpatriotic republican values and actions.
