When will the Arizona U.S. Senate special election happen?

I mean no disrespect to John McCain by mentioning this so soon. I always did respect him (except when he selected Sarah Palin) and crossed over to vote for him in the 2000 Presidential primary.

But, given the situation with the current President and that Arizona is rapidly trending more blue, this will be a pretty huge special election. How does this work in Arizona - is it a special election vote or a governor's appointment for the remainder of the term?

Ted Kennedy also died on August 25th and if I remember correctly, Deval Patrick made an interim appointment who was a friend of the Kennedy family and then Scott Brown got elected in early January. Is that a likely time frame for the special election for McCain's seat?

R.I.P. and truly best regards for McCain, who was an honorable man, but this could be what the Senate majority rests on.

State law says it must be filled via appointment until a general election can occur. However, there is no time for a primary before the 2018 general election and the next general is in 2020.

8. The winner in 2020 serves until 2022 when the term is up again for its normal election date.

If he had retired months ago when he first left the Senate for his health, an appointment could have been made and then the primary could be held this Tuesday during Arizona's regular primary date and the election to serve until 2022 could be held this November. But no, he refused to resign thus preventing Democrats from flipping his seat until at least 2020.

... for a special election, and thus leaving it up to an appointment by the Republican governor.

6. Neither a special, nor to the end of term from what I saw, but rather until 2020 general.

I just read somewhere that the gov appoints someone until the next general election, but that we're past the point to get onto the 2018 general election ballot. So the appointment lasts until 2020 general. But that election will just be to finish out the term, which goes to 2022.
