John McCain, who endured more than five years as a prisoner of war in Vietnam before becoming the 2008 Republican presidential nominee and serving Arizona for more than 30 years on Capitol Hill, died Saturday at age 81.

5 1/2 years as a POW, so much torture endured, some of it in solitary.

He was admired by colleagues on both sides of the aisle. But love him, hate him, or indifference— whatever one thinks, John McCain was one of a kind.

32. I have a somewhat personal connection to John McCain.

I rented a condo a few years ago in National Harbor from John McCain's personal cook. She was a African America lady. I never met her personally but I did meet her daughter. From those conversations I got the impression John was very good to her mother and was very generous to her as well. I think he was a very decent man even though his political policies were far from mine.

His voice of reason will be missed in the Senate.

RIP Senator McCain.
