I think the GOP believes is can establish complete and unbreakable dictatorial one party rule in the US. Kavanaugh is one example of stacking the entire court system with extreme right wing cranks in order to block any future Democratic gains. The GOP has gone a long way with voter suppression, voter fraud, purging, gerrymandering, electronic machine tampering, dominating MSM, eliminating progress talk radio, breaking campaign laws, compromising the justice system, race baiting, bigotry, money laundering, et al. Plus they have most of the oligarch billionaires spending even billions of dollars for them.
And the final thing they are counting on is that they have the Russians. They are a tool and asset of the Russians now. The fact that they will protect Trump at all costs is so telling. Trump is proving to be completely lawless and a thieving crook.
Each day proves that we MUST prevail in November. That it is a fight we can win despite the odds. We have to prove them wrong.

(10,533 posts)However, as you pointed out, there are serious structural problems and design flaws in our so-called democracy that must be rectified or this will just keep happening until the entire system collapses. Assuming it isn't too late already.
I think that we are now seeing all these structural problems and design flaws laid bare as they have been exacerbated and exploited by the GOP and their friends in Russia. As you pointed out, voter suppression, gerrymandering, well-financed right-wing propaganda disguised as "news" are just some of these problems.
But it is also the fact that far-right conservatives are vastly over-represented in our government due to 1) the electoral college, 2) the fact that our Constitution allots two Senators per state, irrespective of population, and 3) the fact that we have not added to the number of representatives in the House since 1911, despite the current population being more than 3 times what it was then. We are also seeing what happens when we rely on "norms" to keep our government functioning properly, for example, when the first black president nominates a Supreme Court justice and the Senate just ignores it.
So while the next midterm election is critical, there are bigger-picture issues that we need to address if the republic is to survive. If you haven't already, I would strongly recommend reading "It's Time To Fight Dirty" by David Faris, which addresses a lot of these issues.

(7,817 posts)my only modification is that at some point Trump will become expendable and the GOP will rehabilitate themselves by quickening his exit one way or another (....in any scenario someone will have to pay Trump lots of money so that he doesn't take down half the gop when he leaves). By then, courts will be packed with wingers, voter ID will be in place, election integrity remains as vulnerable as ever, perhaps a war or two will be raging, rosenstein and sessions will be gone and whoever is AG will sit on Mueller's report forever. As you say, the world's oligarchs will chip in, Fox and RW radio will warn of the dangers of socialism and Hillary 24/7...most of media (owned by the oligarchs) will still be reporting on the trees and not the forest.
I believe we haven't yet seen Trump spread his tiny, corrupt wings and use the full power of the office to protect himself. Certainly he has already abused his powers and the WH podium and has tampered with witnesses and has obstructed justice...but there's a lot more abuse he hasn't yet tapped.
It was clear since Bush won his second term that the dems and the majority of the reasoning public are in a deep hole that took decades to build...deeper today than ever. This decades old effort is of course all about consolidation of wealth and power. Are we more democratic or less democratic than in 2004? More inequality or less? More able to expel a wannabe potus dictator or less?
(sorry for the ramble and too many metaphors...short response is that I agree and that where we are is the result of decades of RW and top .1% preparation)

(28,270 posts)or bloody revolution/civil war the GOP will install a fascist theocracy and make Dump Dear Leader for life.
Or all democrats in this country can get off their asses in a historic huge blue wave election and save this country.
These are the choices. I hope America chooses well.

(28,270 posts)SCOTUS pick?
Can we stop an unindicted co-conspirator from installing his handpicked justice, who will undoubtedly approve any and all Trump lawless, anti democracy acts.
The damn GOP will have the SC locked up for the next 40 years or so.
The coup is here already aided by Russia.
