This is the first time in a really long time I've been so hopeful about a candidate here. We're still a handful of points behind in the polls, but it's early and we're gaining momentum and donations are up.
My new Texas motto is; Remember to Vote Beto!

(478 posts)and I got goosebumps, knowing that someday, he would be our first black president. Watching Beto O'Rourke is giving me those goosebumps. God I hope he wins.

(22,270 posts)My hubs was working out of town and I called him and told him I had just seen our first black president.
At the time, I did not think it would be so soon.
I can totally see Beto giving the Keynote in 2020. Another in a long line of great Texan keynote speakers:
Ann Richards
Barbara Jordan
Julian Castro
We also have this bodacious woman running for Commissioner of Agriculture who pretty much sucks all the air out of any room she is in I can see her giving the keynote. She is hilarious and smart, just like Ann Richards.

(62,276 posts)We need that kind of charisma and power and strength behind our candidates. He also very expertly controlled the crowd which wanted to become partisan and get mad at each other by diffusing it. Very well done. This guy needs to win.

(22,270 posts)If you have notifications enabled, you'll get a pop up when he's going live. You too can watch him fold his blue shirts at the laundromat,, scarf down a triple meat Whataburger and then skateboard in the parking lot, drive around Texas and oh yeah give a few town halls here and there.

(15,290 posts)These are about the 3 best books I have ever read. Growing up in the '60s, thought I knew a lot about the civil rights movement, but reading Branch's biography of MLK and the entire civil rights movement was an absolute eye opener. All who participated were as brave and heroic as any GI who fought in the trenches of WWI or landed in France on D-Day.
If you have not read the Branch trilogy, highly, highly recommended.

(11,107 posts)I won't go so far as suggest I would be willing to move to Texas (shudder). However, I would like the opportunity to vote for O'Rourke in a national election. So, Texas put O'Rourke in the Senate and get him moving down that road.

(66 posts)has the chance to be the most important in the long term for the future of our party. This video is not the exception, this is who he is. I have grown so cynical over the last decade. The first town hall I went to see this man in person made me a believer. He isn't just on the correct side of the issues, he has the natural charisma to sell these issues to the average American. We overlook that so much when discussing future leaders of the party. We may not like it, but the American populace responds more to charisma, than policy. We overlooked that because Obama was so good at both.
I am a volunteer on his campaign. I have made it a point to do either a block walk, or phone bank, at least once a week if not more. Though we try to target would be democratic party voters, the data we're going off of isn't always accurate and we do talk to independents and even some hard core right wing nutjubs. The thing I've noticed is that even some of the right wing crazies who have had a chance to see this man live, come away at least questioning their own beliefs on certain issues, specifically about so called "far left" issues like universal health care. Just this weekend, in 105 degree heat, I knocked on the door of a home where our data was wrong. The current resident had not voted in 6 years. He was very similar to myself. We were the same age, both married, both working our absolute assess off to try to stay middle class. I took a bit longer than normal with this guy and showed him just a random video bit on my phone from the town hall Beto hosted in our town last week. This man, who said he really had no interest in voting, committed to voting for Beto right there on the spot, with GENUINE enthusiasm. For those of you who canvass, you know stuff like that NEVER happens.
Beto is the rare combination of both good policy sense and rockstar Kennedy like charisma. I only hope his promising future isn't cut short because he is from the deep red hellhole that is Texas. There is hope though. Beto, who is actually running to the left of what would be considered the average democrat, is within 4%. FOUR. In fucking Texas. He has outraised Cruz, and the enthusiasm factor isn't even close. Will we win? In all honesty, it will be incredibly difficult. I just hope if we fall short, Beto doesn't drop off the radar of the national scene. Anyone who can run this far left and make Texas competitive, would be an absolute force on the national scene.

(10,053 posts)He is an amazing speaker and is able to avoid nasty partisan fights by recognizing the diversity of opinion yet taking a clear stand for his beliefs. I think people want that clarity. I know I do because Im just fed up with politicians who lie or spin things so you dont really know what they believe. Go Beto!
