Roanoke County Democrat Carter Turner will contest the Republican candidate for the House of Delegates seat held by Del. Greg Habeeb, who is resigning at months end.
Turner, who lives in Glenvar and is the associate director of advancement at Radford University, was the only person to file by his partys deadline of noon Wednesday, said Jon Marino, chairman of the nominating committee. Turner, 48, is well-known within Roanoke Valley Democratic political circles. Marino said the committee will review Turners qualifications soon and certify him as the nominee.
I am committed to empowering the people in my home community especially those who have been left behind in our complex economy, Turner said in a statement. We need to create tools and resources to improve lives including expanded broadband and affordable higher education options.
urner also said he wants to advocate expanding Interstate 81 in the Roanoke Valley, as well as the state taking bold steps to address the opioid crisis. He said he supports extending health care to all residents and protecting womens reproductive rights.
Republicans, who have long held the seat, will learn if they will have a contested nomination by a noon Thursday filing deadline. Roanoke County Supervisor Joe McNamara announced last week he was running, and he appeared to have robust support from local Republicans, including state Sen. Dave Suetterlein of Roanoke County, and other elected officials.
The candidates will be on the ballot in a Nov. 6 special election coinciding with the general election.
