He can carry a segment on his own, or make tremendous use of guests. Easily the most versatile host they have.
Contemporary insight and apt historical references.

(10,039 posts)She constanly reprimands Ali for attmpting to interject then interjects the whole time Ali himself is making whatever point he is trying to make. She's also constantly crying and I don't buy it for a second. I'm not particularly fond of her history in the finance industry either. Rachel, Ari or Brian Williams for me.

He is a self important stuffed shirt
That said he has an affable TV presence and can snap off a good punchline with the best of them.
He does have a great delivery. Old school.

NBC must like his delivery, too.

Anyway, he was suspended over it & lost his anchor position with NBC & put on the late spot on MSNBC. The beautiful bombs comment bothered me more but I still like him.
Frustratedlady
(16,254 posts)while, but being in the public view would not be a good place to try. There is no way I could talk for that amount of time...under pressure to fill the hour...without screwing up. I should think he's paid his due, but then look at Biden and his plagiarism charge. Sheesh. How many years ago was that and he's still paying for it.
I vote to give him a little space. He's worth staying up for.

(13,571 posts)Witty, calm, erudite, excellent at what he does to drive the story every night. I find his show the perfect end to the news day. Plus he brings all my favorite print reporters. Jonathan Lemire of AP is a particular favorite in my house.

(26,060 posts)his show. He gets great guests (given the hour).
And he ties it all together in a sort of narrative. The news of the day.
I really have appreciated getting to know the top print reporters. I'm sure that none of them went to J school knowing that their professional careers would be this dramatic. Jonathan Lemire, who was tasked with question for Putin and Trump in Helsinki, is just a dad and the front man for AP. But he rose to his task that day with such courage, such professional finesse to get Trump and Putin on the record regarding the election interference. I am in awe of his courage that day. He said later that Putin was staring him down. Putin kills journos.

(26,060 posts)Mr. Williams obviously has cultivated some amazing sources throughout his career. He lost his reputation for telling a lie only to watch a wh0remongering degenerate who lies at least a dozen times a day slither into the oval office.

(11,098 posts)Rachel is simply wicked smart in tying things together. Brian is a really good interviewer (and always good for a late night chuckle).
I watch the entire evening line-up most nights. Most nights I end up screaming at Matthews to let his guests talk. Larry is good even if he often overstates. I try really hard not to miss Rachel and stay-up later than I should to see Brian.

Glad I'm not the only one thinking that. Not to take away from Dr. Maddow and the other current hosts, they do a great job in their own unique way, but Mr. Olbermann has the combination of intellect, gravitas, wit, ethics, humor, anger, and fire that is missing.
As for Mr. Williams, I know some folks here like him, but 11pm is when I switch to the Daily Show for some amusement but also realize how much I miss Jon Stewart.....Y'know, if the incredibly intelligent, savvy, great-looking, and impeccably dressed people in charge at MSNBC want to approach Mr. Stewart about returning to the airwaves (possible weeknights at 7:30 pm or 11pm, or even just weekly on Fridays at 10pm or Sundays at 8pm), I wouldn't mind at all.

(10,039 posts)I would have said C.M.. I just think he's too old now to get through an entire hour. The interruptions are worse than ever and he get dangerously close to sounding offensive every night. I think it's innocent and I understand what he's trying to get at most of the time but many others may not. Finally the movie references are trotted out more than ever and I'm not fond of them. Some may be germane but life is not a movie.

(42,770 posts)How each of us are averse to our own certain personalities and not others. Just glancing down I see Rachel's name everywhere. I don't have enough patience to listen to her anymore. It may be the cried wolf story too many times. Every night the same....long, tedious, repetitive story that she acts like is a major scoop. But they all aren't. Its not possible. And when you act like they are you lose credibility.

(47,482 posts)MSNBC has so much great talent these days. Rachel used to be my favorite, but I find myself fast-forwarding a lot, as the redundancy and over explaining can become tedious. Lawrence's opening segment is excellent, always worth watching.
Katy Tur has been refreshing and outspoken - very watchable. Nichole Wallace has been a total surprise to me. There was a time when I couldn't have imagined going out of my way to watch her.
I really can't pick a favorite as there are so many good ones, but I still could easily do without Chris Matthews, Chuck Todd, and Joe Scarborough. Also can't take too much of Kasie Hunt for some reason.

(14,565 posts)Nicole Wallace - pure, unadulterated 45 and GOP haterade, with a panel of unabashed 45 and GOP hateraders. It may turn post 45, but in the here and now, glorious.
LO - I like his presentation, and he probably is the hardest puncher in the lineup right now.
Rachel - she is truly exceptional, but it gets a little to hard for me to follow at night.
Velshi and Ruhle - they go directly at the GOP/45, and the most effective at taking our righteous position on economic issues.
Melber and Hayes - they are solid, but not on at times I watch.
Never watch
Brian Williams - nothing negative for him, but when I watch live at that time I tend to want to watch Don Lemon for some diversity (in a number of ways).
Chris Mathews - he is flighty as hell, the absolute worst interviewer possible, just painful to try to watch. Haven't watched a second of his show in half a decade now.
Chuck Todd - Complete lightweight, who has surpassed his Peter Principle by a half dozen steps, and who has a very open disdain for liberals/kisses right wing ass.
Mrs. Greenspan - completely talentless as a tv host, an old school closet liberal hater that lets her biases bubble out, and just flat out unwatchable.
Scarborough - liberals do a disservice supporting his show. Yeah, he has his childish trump bashing, but for whatever five minute period I manage to watch ever few months before I want to smash the TV he does his prototype liberal bashing or bullshit glorfifying of the GOP - and he remains a pscyhopath.

(15,412 posts)I love her show because I like her personality and she has Steve Schmidt on more than the others. She actually has the best guest talking heads of all of them.

Andrea Mitchell
Tweety-My least favorite, hands down.

(15,286 posts)Chris Hayes is the best interviewer and always has interesting back and forth discussions with his guests.
I like Rachel, too, but sometimes her opening monologues drag on and on.
I used to like Melber, but he's gotten on my last nerve with his smug uber-lawyerlyness and obsession with quoting rap lyrics/rappers. I'm of the Beatles generation and I'd find it idiotic if say, Matthews, quoted Beatle song lyrics/imdividual Beatles every show.

I also like to hear what Rev Al has to say about what's going on, if I happen to be up at that hour, but he's also a frequent guest on other shows.
