https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/15/politics/andrew-cuomo-america-was-never-that-great/index.htmlFor the record, I support Cuomo's statement fully and stand by him even though Harris or Warren are my preferred 2020 candidates.
This will absolutely dominate the news cycle for the next few days in ways that little else has. I do expect an epic firestorm but sometimes things like this must be said.

(53,778 posts)I was disappointed he stopped with "until women fulfill their potential". He could have included AAs, Latinx, Muslim Americans, Native Americans, etc. but I guess it was a women's event.
His younger brother seems to have a little more spark too when speaking.

(25,857 posts)There's a lot to like about this country, but there's a collective delusion that this is the greatest country ever, which simply isn't true.

Sometimes we take a few steps backwards in the construction.

(10,721 posts)He could have said the country was founded upon the genocide of one people and the enslavement of another, the effects of which are still felt. That this society is patriarchal and white supremacist, as well as woefully ignorant. And he'd be right. The truth hurts.

I was also happy to turn around and do a small part in kicking their asses.
The USA has flaws, but, I can assure you, compared to most any other country, it's pretty damn fantastic, in the past and in the future.
For example, the biggest blight on the USA: slavery. Well, the USA is hardly alone in that regard. All nations have taken slaves or their equivalent at some time. What is unique about the USA is slavery was abhorred by half the nation and we fought a very bloody war to get rid of it. Nary a country in the world fought a war like that -- with itself -- to free people.
I came to the USA essentially penniless; my father was a skilled worker that got us our ticket. We went from nothing to (me and my siblings): soldier/cop/lawyer/aide to a president, doctor, doctor, research scientist, engineer, and college professor.
That would never have happened in any other country.

(45,485 posts)They were coal miners and undertakers. The next generation were police officers and construction workers. Now we are engineers and veterinarians. Our kids go to college and choose their own path.
This is a great country when it attempts to live up to its ideals.

(32,704 posts)of no atrocities or inhumane acts committed by the U.S. (domestically and/or internationally). Slavery, massacres, Jim Crowe, inhumane medical experiments, atomic/nuclear bombs, illegal invasions, land grabs, etc. The list goes on and on. The latest inhumane act (caged kids) is still ongoing. SMFH. And now the image of the US being that shining place on the hill is quickly crumbling. Hypocritical racists whose own parents/grandparents immigrated here want to shut the doors.
All the things that supposedly made America great in the eyes of the world--"democracy," overcoming a disgusting past and providing opportunity for ALL people--those things are being stripped away.
This trump debacle is waking a lot of people up.
