Here are results from the daily Gallup poll:
https://news.gallup.com/poll/201617/gallup-daily-trump-job-approval.aspx
In the immediate aftermath of Charlottesville Trump's approval rating had sunk to 34% and his disapproval ratings rose to 60%. He would add no new voters to his base. Yeah, some of his existing support would harden but a lot of his soft supporters would peel off.
It puzzles me that the same people who believe a Blue Wave will sweep out the Republicans in November believe Trump's approval will go up if he was captured using the N word on tape. The two propositions are mutually exclusive. If you accept the latter proposition you must of necessity believe he should incorporate the N-word into his daily vocabulary.

(99,710 posts)A not insignificant portion of that 42.2% is soft support. I would gladly see his hard support grow harder in exchange for his soft support peeling away.

(82,849 posts)Yeah, it seems silly, but I've read about 60 things from bright people who've said that Trump's latest career-killing move would end his candidacy or his presidency, and yet he continues, cockroach-like, to skitter about the White House. I don't know all the reasons for it, but one major contributing factor is the popular media's devotion to airing every bogus excuse, lie, and cover-up blarped out by the administration to gaslight the public.
The media have shown signs, at long last, that they're not going to just follow along with the self-serving lies of people whose paychecks depend on defending Trump. But far too much damage has been done.

(13,424 posts)As of now, his source of power - the loyalty of his base and the cowardice of the Republican Congress - will grow if such a tape is released. On the flip side, Democratic intensity for November will increase as well. The only question is if that intensity will make the cowardice of the Republicans in Congress irrelevant.
