At least 11 people are dead after a raised highway partially collapsed in the Italian city of Genoa during a violent storm on Tuesday.
A 200-meter section of the Morandi Bridge collapsed over an industrial zone, according to officials. Firefighters say there are concerns about gas lines. At least 200 firefighters responded to the crisis.
The tragedy took place on a highway that connects Italy to France and other vacation resorts. Traffic was likely heavier due to Ferragosto, a major Italian holiday that will be celebrated on Wednesday.
Rescue efforts are still underway, but the Italian news agency ANSA, citing the Interior Ministry, says that 11 people are confirmed dead. Investigators believe there were at least 10 vehicles involved.

This is a major disaster - a freak storm they say.
Looks like one of those two day rains in a few hours.

(146,317 posts)3. A terrible engineering failure.
Such a failure caused the collapse of the I-35E bridge in Minneapolis, too. Underdesigned, poorly maintained, and a disaster waiting to happen.
We trust bridges and other such structures not to fall out from under us. Sadly, not all of them were designed and built correctly, and are just waiting to do that one day.
