"Hawai`i Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-02) won Saturday's three-way Democratic Primary Election, earning 84% of the votes cast."
"Hawaii's people understand that the cost of war impacts us all--through lives lost and resources wasted. Every dollar spent on interventionist wars of choice is a dollar we are not investing in our communities right here at home on things like healthcare, education, infrastructure, and more."

(17,659 posts)Hindsight being 20-20 and all, she could have been more effective. I had to make a choice between the two and just left that part of the ballot blank.
Tulsi is running for President and at least appears to lack the grounding and core local Democratic principles that identified our towering historic figures such as Patsy Mink, Sparky Matsunaga and Senator Akaka.
She is much more of a pragmatist, saying shes willing to work with Donald Trump and Assad. I dont know her core beliefs about how the government should represent people, and Ive known her since the 06 Akaka campaign.
In a community where a Republican would have almost no chance to win, we now have one and will have two people in the House who are at least sometimes go-along-to-get-alongers. (Ed Case was once the sole Dem to vote to defund PBS and NPR He also often said when running for Patsy Minks seat after she died that he would have voted for the Iraq War Resolution, which none of our other electeds supported. That was for the CD2 seat, which the OP is talking about now. )
But we have two outstanding Senators who make us very proud!

80% + voters disagrees with your "core democratic principles" assessment..
Will you leave the top of the ticket blank if she is a Presidential or Vice Presidential candidate??

(2,872 posts)it's obvious that "blue no matter who" is just a talking point around here.. the proponents only apply that standard strategically..
Look up Ocasio for perfect examples recently.. or anyone that bucks the standard orthodoxy of centrism for that matter..

(2,872 posts)you don't have to keep posting that - most really don't think that was a bad thing.. she won BIG, the smears did not work - I think it's time for a new tactic.. challenge on policies, a candidate would have to go MORE progressive to take her seat.. but I am sure TPTB don't want to do that..

(17,659 posts)What it TPTB?
Do you live in her district? I do.

(17,659 posts)How Tulsi Gabbard became Assads mouthpiece in Washington
https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/global-opinions/how-tulsi-gabbard-became-assads-mouthpiece-in-washington/2017/01/29/215e9c70-e4bf-11e6-a547-5fb9411d332c_story.html?noredirect=on&utm_term=.e2a6524aa323
The Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria has had a quiet but well-funded lobbying effort in Washington since well before he began murdering his own people. But that influence campaigns clearest triumph came only this month, when it succeeded in bringing Rep. Tulsi Gabbard (D-Hawaii) to Damascus and having her parrot Assads propaganda on her return.
Gabbard was not the first U.S. elected official to meet Assad. In the early years of Assads presidency, several senior U.S. lawmakers publicly traveled to see the young English-speaking optometrist-turned-ruler, in the hope that he might be a reformer, break with Iran and even make peace with Israel. Then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) visited Assad in 2007. Then-Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) led a delegation in 2009.
After the killing began in 2011, however, Assads friends in Washington largely went underground and a covert influence and intimidation campaign blossomed. The FBI began investigating Syrian ambassador Imad Moustapha, due to evidence he was keeping tabs on Syrian Americans who showed disloyalty so the Syrian government could threaten their families back home. Moustapha departed for Beijing in 2012, but he left in place a network of friends, Syrian Americans and others who nurtured close ties to the regime and worked on Assads behalf.

(17,659 posts)She will run for Senate as soon as she has a chance and so will Ed Case who is going to be our other rep.
Our sitting Senators are excellent and make me proud daily. I prefer to keep them.
Count on Tulsi running for President. Be sure to learn about her beliefs including pro India.
She is the only member of our delegation who supported the travel ban. Shes got some odd beliefs. I am not talking about religion which I think is a persons own private business.
I know how the vote went here and it was predictable.
Cheers.

If Tulsi winning bruises your sensibilities.. then I guess you can take it how you wish - bringing Obama into the conversation as a distraction will not work.. Tulsi is the Dem nominee

(146,311 posts)That never changes. I don't live in Gabbard's district, so my opinion is irrelevant there.
The same thing is true in every House district. I'm content to let the Democratic voters in each district decide on their GE candidate. I don't understand people who think their opinions matter, but who have nothing to do with a district's election. I'd prefer that they focused on their own and neighboring districts.

(2,872 posts)Gabbard was roundly drug here on DU.. by many not in her district - were you critical then??
If my politics/ policies that I support align with any candidate I will support & promote them.. no matter what district they are in cause that it what is required to affect change..

(146,311 posts)not in or near my own district. Every House race is a local election. I leave them to local voters. And, as we see, Gabbard did just fine in her own district. I don't know much about her district, really.
I do not participate in local elections, except when they are local to me.

(2,872 posts)if all I did was pay attention to my locals.. I'd get bored very quickly.. although, we finally have a shot of taking back PA11 w/ a progressive from the R's this coming November - the most excitement in years for this red county..

(146,311 posts)I'd be doing what I could to flip it. There's a GOP district near me, where the Democratic challenger has a pretty good chance. So, I'll be trying to help, since my own district is a lock for Betty McCollum.
I get excited by elections where I can make a difference. Distant districts don't excite me at all.
