4. I dunno if it qualifies for the Steisand effect because it was going to get lots of attention anyway

but I do think they make stuff worse for themselves with their reflexive aggressive reactions to stuff like this. They should stick with "she's an opportunist and a liar, and doesn't deserve a response" because their reaction makes it look like they've got something to hide -- and they can't have it both ways, either she's lying OR this something they are trying to hide is a real thing.
