Northern Plains to sizzle in brief but intense heat wave this weekend

A piece of the impressive heat dome that scorched the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies this past week will briefly shift eastward into the northern Plains this weekend.

This bubble of heat has already been responsible for shattering record highs in the northern Rockies -- and more record highs will be in jeopardy farther east this weekend.

"Boise, Idaho, reached 110 degrees Fahrenheit on Friday, falling just shy of its all-time record high temperature of 111 F, set on July 19, 1960," AccuWeather Meteorologist Brett Rathbun said.

Friday marked the sixth-consecutive day that the mercury reached or exceeded the 90-degree mark in Portland, Oregon.
Seattle also experienced an official heat wave, defined as three or more 90-degree days in a row, from Tuesday to Thursday.

The storm system responsible for the big cooldown in the Pacific Northwest this weekend will track across southern Canada into early next week and be responsible for dragging the heat into the northern Plains along its southern flank.

"Winds high up in the atmosphere will transport wildfire smoke from California and the Pacific Northwest eastward, leading to poor air quality and hazy, smoky skies in the northern Plains this weekend," Rathbun said.

Record heat is expected to scorch Boise again on Saturday as temperatures soar above the century mark before seasonable temperatures return by Sunday.

Triple-digit heat is also in store for Billings and Great Falls, Montana, and Salt Lake City before high temperatures peel back by 5-15 degrees on Sunday.

it's 103 outside right now... so I don't think the dome has shifted all that much.

It's been over 100 here since, I think, late June.
