August 10, 2018 at 10:52 pm EDT By Taegan Goddard
About 70 outlets had committed to editorials denouncing what the Globe called a dirty war against the free press, with the list expected to grow.

(24,259 posts)Trump is waging war on the Constitution and the free press, that our forefathers felt so strongly was needed to monitor gov that they included it in the 1st Amend.
I can't believe it's taken them this long. Personally I think all of the news media needs to do more than just publish/say words. They must follow up on it with actions.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)about their own industry, you'll see they've been working on how to deal with Trump and the rising fascism and social conservatism that produced his presidency.
Journalists have been changing a number of longstanding practices based on honorable journalistic principles that are no longer working as they did. They adopt various new practices, some work, some have to be adjusted all over again as Trump's administration, Fox, other inimical right-wing forces work around those. Actions.
And, of course, they've been editorializing and devoting vast amounts of coverage to what's happening. Investigative journalism has had a renaissance. Actions. Words.
Let's hope this coordinated editorial event response to fascistic attacks on the fourth estate itself gets some attention from some who weren't already paying attention. That editorial boards nationwide are joining in shows how worried they are.

(24,259 posts)It's not being heard/seen by enough average Americans who are all too often people who are not looking for it and seem to want their news served up on a silver platter complete with being told what they should make of it if my Facebook feed and comments on news articles I read are anything at all to go by.
In contrast most DUers are people who will look for information, even dig for it, & check facts. Sadly we're still in the minority but while it may be wishful thinking, I do still have hope.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)short of hand-delivering the news on silver platters to 200M breakfast tables. All they can do is publish those words. Listening and reading are up to us.
Fwiw, after decades of claims that investigative journalism was dying, it's bigger and better than ever before.
What we really need that we don't have is what we once required of broadcast news: A single hour in the day committed to delivering honest news in the public service. But more honest news than anyone could possibly take in is available 24/7/365 on the web. And large amounts are totally free.

(92,418 posts)in 2001, the press has been going out of their way to paint a picture of "equivalencies" between republicans and Democrats for fear that they would be labelled as "the liberal media", however, that actually ends up distorting things.
Chuck Todd actually characterized the state of the media quite well when he said "Its Not Medias Job To Correct falsehoods made by politicians.". That of course is nonesense. Not only is it their job, but their responsibility.
Matt Lauer's interview of Hillary Clinton, verses his softball interview with Donald Trump is just one of many examples of how the media pretty much gave Trump a free pass, and setup the situation we find ourselves in today.
It has only been recently when I have actually read and heard members of the fourth estate actually refer to trump's lies, as lies
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)But in this case I was addressing what the press are doing now to counter what this administration is spearheading.
And what I afterward wished I'd said, instead of talking about journalism, was my belief that we need focus on the real problems of the takeover of the right by the anti-democracy forces of malignant social conservatism, Christian dominionism, and cultural and economic fascism.
All this is about that, after all. We need to stay focused on what they are doing.
The right was already rejecting honest news when Fox was formed to meet that market by telling them what they wanted to hear; now, of course, what once at least pretended to be a real news source is now a major actor in the attempted overthrow of our democracy. And of course these malignant forces have been working all along to take over the fourth estate, with successes we can see clearly in some blatant acts, only strongly suspect/believe in many widespread patterns of dishonest reporting.
America's right-wing authoritarian voters, excited by recent victories and what they see as a strong leader, now hope to put an end to decades of losses at the polls under liberal democracy by replacing it with a white authoritarian government. Even more than they always did, they will reject all information that doesn't support their rising storm.

Love the optimism, but print doesn't have the impact it once did. Hopefully this bleeds over to the Internets.

(383 posts)Turn on any news channel (except Faux Noise) and see how often you hear, The Washington Post is reporting...The New York Times just reported... The Wall Street Journal has a story today... You get the picture. Print news is not as glamorous as sitting in front of a camera with coiffed hair and pearly whites; it's wearing out shoe leather and scrounging around for productive leads.
Their impact is not as visible as it once was, but don't underestimate their importance to a storyline.

(14,039 posts)Print may lack glamour, but it does help drive a lot of reporting elsewhere.
I think a statement made en masse will prove newsworthy on its own merit.
The press is the enemy of the people who don't want to think or care.
calimary
(81,507 posts)They routinely bring editorial columnists and print reporters with front-page bylines onto their shows. Some come on so frequently that they're added as regular "contributors" and "analysts".
But you're right. Print people usually aren't that preoccupied with camera-ready appearances. When I went to the AP, I noticed that immediately. Most of the bureau was print people. Our little radio corner was just that. Near the end of the room just in front of where the photo guys worked. It was a room full of "mild-mannered Clark Kents" - male AND female versions. No Lois Lanes, though.

(12,595 posts)in the cage where the news media is corralled and kept from wandering around gathering information (which makes them a harder target for Donnie Two Scoops to point at), there's a sign saying, "Fuck you. Love, First Amendment."
The reporters can watch the live feed from the safety of a nearby Waffle House. If anything newsworthy is said the sound bite could be worked into the final report, and if it's significant, breaking news.
Meanwhile, those pecan waffles are yum-yum good!

(11,744 posts)A free and objective press is necessary for Democracy to flourish.
What the press should be doing and should have been doing all along is reporting the information in an honest and accurate way. Trump's actions are sufficient so that they should have brought him down with simple, honest reporting. The problem with the media is that the idea of "access" and acceptance by the political system and the drive to increase revenue has dictated their stance toward Trump.
Nixon hated the media because they kept reporting what he was doing and they just kept asking him difficult and necessary questions about his actions. Trump attacks the media because they don't fawn over him, but they gave him over 2 billion dollars worth of free advertising during the primary and general elections
He should be taking himself down not the press. The press should just be reporting accurately, the actions he is taking that cause him to go down.

(13,571 posts)The majority in the co-equal third branch of government, Congress, has abdicated its oath to the Constitution.
But members of the press are facing down real threats, working with professionalism and finesse to find the news and bring it to the people.
Example. Jonathan Lemire of AP stood before Trump and Putin and asked THE two questions that transformed coverage of this WH and its scandal. Lemire says that Putin was staring him down while he asked the question. Putin kills journalists. Lemire is just a working man with a family. Doggedly chasing the news. Working his craft, his profession, with finesse.
I have nothing but respect for our top print journalists -- who never thought when they went to J-school that they would be standing between the people and tyranny. But they are.
If you want to get acquainted with our print journos, watch Brian Williams' news roundup at 11 EDT MSNBC. The top reporters chasing the day's news are there, live.

(38,448 posts)The professor said.."The first Amendment to the Constitution has the strongest language in law.
It says Congress shall make NO Law..and NO is a very simple word. And it was on purpose..
Here are the exact words of the First Amendment of the Constitution of the USA.
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

(2,012 posts)It is too late for most newspapers in the US to make any difference with editorial response against Trump's attacks on the news media. Have you noticed lately what has happened to your local newspaper? When I was growing up in Indianapolis we had two newspapers and though both were owned by big money we could usually get more than one side of the news and this was true in most big cities like Chicago.
In April of this year a huge hedge fund headquartered in New York City, Alden Global Capital, bought the Denver Post and almost all of the local newspapers in Colorado. The Washington Post called Alden "one of the most ruthless of the corporate strip mines seemingly intent on destroying local journalism." Through it's subsidiary Digital First Media (the second largest newspaper company in the U.S), Alden owns nearly one hundred daily and weekly papers. In California it effectively owns every major newspaper around Los Angeles and San Francisco with the exception of the San Francisco Chronicle and the Los Angeles Times. Soon after purchasing the Denver Post Alden laid off 240 of its 300 news and editorial staff. We now get very few objective editorials and even fewer letters to the editors. You can imagine how few articles ever mention Trump's and Big Energy's lies. The Boulder Daily Camera, a local paper which was known for its coverage of local political and cultural interests, immediately fired its award winning editor and one-third of the staff.
This is a disaster for the cities but even worse for small communities who get only FOXnews and Sinclair newspapers.
