(12,509 posts)who severely de-staffed the Florida water management districts and Dept of Environmental Protection, and this is the result. So go f*ck yourselves Florida.
I worked for years with DEP and WMD staff to micro-tune point source and sheet runoff discharges to help prevent these phosphorus blooms, but most of those people are gone now. They were fired because they caused Scott's campaign contributors (sugar and phosphorus mining lobby) a lot of grief making them control their discharges.
I feel bad for the loss of fish, manatees and those kids that got sick from playing in the water, but for the sport fishermen and others who voted for that crook Scott, I hope they get virulently sick too.
How stupid do you have to be to not realize that if your state is a a narrow peninsula surrounded by water, you take care of it. All of this wildlife death is manmade and could have been avoided.
Go ahead Florida, put the gun to your head again and vote Scott for Senator.

(7,142 posts)As I posted in the Wilbur Ross thread, the United States is being ruled by the corporate state, not the made up deep state.
We are so far down the corporate rabbit hole there may be no way out. The working class Republicans will vote for people like Scott and Trump until the day they die, probably from corporate poison. Working class folks will be asked to sacrifice more because so much money is being transferred from the bottom up. (See tax cuts for the rich) Every year, no matter the political party, we increase our bloated 20th century military budget. We are spending a trillion dollars a year on 800 bases in 100 countries while we neglect our own environment, our own country.

(808 posts)The things that are happening here in Florida are criminal due to Skeletor's actions. He is just one of many swamp dwellers in government here. The electorate is just too stupid and uninformed to make the right decisions.

(7,142 posts)the importance of the M$M in enabling this to happen. The M$M controls the narrative and every cable news network is complicit, yes, including msnbc.
Never has there been more evidence out in the open for the impeachment of Donald Trump and yet the narrative is that Democrats should refrain from talking impeachment because it will hurt them politically. WTF, the M$M should be saying what Steyer is saying.

(61,712 posts)Your tag line image says it all. Corporate interests in Florida have damaged the ecosystem recklessly.
I have experience where I live with the Deepwater Horizon ecological disaster. There is oil at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico that may never go away.
Corporations and their greedy CEOs don't give a shit about the environment.

That disaster never really ended. The oceans are the source of life.

(4,429 posts)Sure, he isn't Rick Scott. But Jeb controlled the state house with an iron hand. NO bill came out onto the floor without his say-so. I had a friend whose brother was the minority leader in the state house, at the time. It was impossible to foster any kind of dialogue. Jeb *didn't* permit it.
And then along came Scott.........
Honestly, having lived there for over a decade - I can't say what's wrong with FL. It's such a weird state - parts very democratic, parts very southern republican. So many transplants who don't care about the schools and the states history - or even the environment.

(12,509 posts)Jeb had $618 million in his coffers dedicated for the "Florida Everglades Restoration". That all went away when, after helping his brother steal the election, he gave ALL that money to his brother to blow up Iraq, and on paper postponed the restoration for 20 to 40 years into the future.
Bush was in bed with sugar growers and phosphorus miners too, but at least he didn't GUT the states environmental protection infrastructure like Scott has.

(4,429 posts)I do use molasses in my coffee (acquired taste) but when I cook for others (fancy desserts, I go back to sugar. (Sometimes unrefined......but often white because it's so cheap )
So much of FL is going to be impacted by climate change - and the state isn't 'up-in-arms' about it.
In a way, I think they deserve it. But, of course, the folks who will be most effected are the same ones who are least able to shoulder that burden.

(32,094 posts)All those lush lawns that go right up to the water use lots and lots of phosphorous-laden fertilizer. And, they don't have to be right on the water to be part of the problem. Even if you live inland, the runoff goes into the sewage systems, and eventually finds its way into the waterways.
Meanwhile, Big Sugar is going to be the death of this country. When they aren't killing off the ecosystem, they're killing all of us. Whoever it was that suppressed the studies pointing to sugar as the culprit for cardiovascular disease and obesity, and shifted the blame to fat, needs to locked up for the rest of their lives. Hell, the whole lot of them do.
