There used to be "maximum wage" laws for industrial workers, laws that forbade people from helping slaves, laws that kept women from voting, and so many more gems. All from the wondrous party of conservatives and capitalists (socialism is for the rich you filthy peasants!), using whatever name they called themselves at the time. Look at all the waste they produce and dump out on our lands, into our waters and skies, leaving all the refuse for us consumers to deal with. They want unregulated capitalism except for the liability part. That they will protect with laws.

14. Russian mining firm puts Trump's face on its asbestos products
Wed Aug 8, 2018, 06:45 PM
Aug 2018
Donald Trump’s environmental policies may have caused controversy in the US but the president’s stance has managed to get him a literal stamp of approval from a Russian mining company.

Uralasbest, one of the world’s largest producers and sellers of asbestos, has taken to adorning pallets of its product with a seal of Trump’s face, along with the words “Approved by Donald Trump, 45th president of the United States”.

The move follows the US Environmental Protection Agency’s recent decision not to ban new asbestos products outright. The EPA said it would evaluate new uses of asbestos but environmental groups have criticized the agency for not going further by barring them on public health grounds.

In a Facebook post, Uralasbest published pictures of its Trump-adorned chrysotile asbestos, writing: “Donald is on our side!” The post thanks Trump for supporting Scott Pruitt, the recently departed head of the EPA, “who declared that his agency would no longer deal with matters related to side effects potentially caused by asbestos”. It adds that Trump called asbestos “100% safe after application”.

If someone would like more information and some commentary about what's in those bags, and their labeling, I'd be happy to oblige as a public service. I'll wait for a request rather than pound the keys unbid because I don't want to work on a post if people have already left this thread.

Also, it may be helpful if you read my other comments in this thread first before we tackle the subject in more detail.

Thanks.

UPDATE: Perhaps my earlier comments here were a bit cryptic. Let's try this: Do you guys want me to share some basic info and insights about the asbestos that's in those bags in the photos? I mean, right here in this thread? How it works, what it does, how it's used, why it's dangerous, and what I think is going on with those pallets?

Honestly, the worst thing, as a reporter, is to be without readers.

I am so glad he is backing all this with really great, free healthcare because people are going to need it more than ever now.

"According to environmental advocates, this new rule gives chemical companies the upper hand in creating new uses for such harmful products in the United States. In May, the EPA released a report detailing its new framework for evaluating the risk of its top prioritized substances. The report states that the agency will no longer consider the effect or presence of substances in the air, ground, or water in its risk assessments."
https://www.democraticunderground.com/10142128350

Now he is also allowing pesticides to be used in wildlife refuges...

"The Interior Department announced plans Friday to reverse a rule that banned the use of pesticides in national wildlife refuges.
The decision, announced in an internal memo posted online, reverses an Obama-era ban on the use of neonicotinoid pesticides as well as genetically engineered crops within refuges where there is farming."

21. A father I knew in my town committed suicide.
Wed Aug 8, 2018, 07:23 PM
Aug 2018

His illness from asbestosis made it hard to work to support his wife and three kids. But to qualify for any aid, he had to not work at all, and that left his family destitute. Neither he nor his wife had the education to know how to navigate the various forms or where to get help. Our Sunday school class gave them money more than once.

His suicide galvanized us into a ministry to figure out what assistance was available, what the process of applying was for each form of assistance, and we set up a volunteer-based referral service. We helped people know how to get help from churches, nonprofits, and others.

A dozen years later, that ministry is a well-funded nonprofit that is still helping many people in need locally.

It figures that Trump would allow asbestos back into use here. What a despicable man!

What a wonderful way to honor that man who lost his life, probably due to complacency of some corporation regarding health and safe work practices. I watched asbestos being carefully removed from plant facilities for many years in my field service work, including some refineries and paper mills in TX.

Considering the very long disastrous history of this material, I seriously doubt if this change will stick for very long. There's no way in hell it will return to any significant usage. Hopefully, insurance underwriters won't allow it.

Top 5 Asbestos Exporters, 2013
1. Russia: 618,037 metric tons
2. Kazakhstan: 175,235 metric tons
3. Brazil: 125,832 metric tons
4. China: 52,860 metric tons
5. India: 119 metric tons

In 2013, Russia led the world in asbestos exports by a massive margin. The nation shipped off 618,037 metric tons of the toxic mineral, more than the next four leading countries combined. While China and India exported significantly less asbestos than Russia, Kazakhstan and Brazil, in 2013 these countries were the two largest asbestos importers.

Source: https://www.asbestos.com/mesothelioma/worldwide/

For the loopholes allowing the reintroduction of asbestos into manufacturing processes under the Trump administration, see the following: https://archpaper.com/2018/08/epa-asbestos-manufacturing/

Let's get the word out. This is almost unbelievable. Yui, once again: You're invaluable. Great post.
- - -

UPDATE: On consideration, I changed my accuracy rating of the meme from 100% to 95% since it refers to a ban, when no outright ban existed. Rather, for decades, there has been a complex web of federal regulations and legal liability that made most uses of the mineral difficult to impossible. That's a more accurate description of the situation than the word ban; but you'd never get that to fit in a meme. Still, I try to be scrupulously honest with everyone on DU, so: 95%. Thanks.

Asbestos in the USA is dead. Gone. It is never coming back.

Persons in the construction industry literally will not even touch it. They won't even touch anything they THINK might be asbestos. Abatement companies are called in for tests whenever anything is questionable and if anything contains asbestos they literally built a tent around it, ventilate the tent through a filter so they release no fibers into the air, and remove it by persons wearing hazmat suits. They will also build a portable shower at the site of the asbestos so they can wash off before leaving the area and putting their own clothes back on. I work in the industry and see this stuff first hand all the time.

Building codes ban its use. You can't even use it if you want to. And even if you made it legal tomorrow there isn't a snowball's chance in HELL that you could sell an ounce of it in the USA. No installer wants to handle it and no Owner wants it in their building. You may as well try to sell paper mache for use in place of structural steel because you probably have a better chance of making sales of that than you do anything with asbestos in it.

Please read the article below for an explanation of the loopholes created by the Trump EPA to allow the reintroduction of asbestos into the building materials manufacturing process.
https://archpaper.com/2018/08/epa-asbestos-manufacturing/

The Guardian has also done some helpful reporting on this:
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2018/jul/11/asbestos-trump-face-seal-uralasbest-russia

Will asbestos be reintroduced into building materials in the U.S.? I don't know. But clearly Trump is pulling levers and turning gears in an effort to make it happen.

Russia is the world's biggest producer, by far, of asbestos (see my fact-check of this earlier in the thread). If the United States, whose lead is followed by many other countries, reintroduces asbestos into various manufacturing processes, it would be a massive boost to the Russian economy.

I don't think the biggest asbestos mining operation in Russia is putting Trump's portrait on their shipping pallets of asbestos for no reason at all.

No company would consider using asbestos. Dozens of companies were sued out of existence because of that decades ago, and that was before everyone knew how carcinogenic it was.

The EPA tried to ban some asbestos products in 1989 and courts overturned that ban in 1991. There is no ban.

If you'll check the two stories I've linked to above, they go into more detail and give a fuller, more accurate picture of what's going on.

TLDR: Asbestos has been difficult to use in the United States for decades due to regulations and legal exposure. The Trump administration's EPA recently announced their decision to not ban asbestos outright and to consider new uses for the mineral.

One of the most disturbing statements by Trump's EPA is as follows: "[The EPA] will no longer consider the effect or presence of substances in the air, ground, or water in its risk assessments." This opens the door to reintroducing the mineral into many manufacturing processes.

Quite frankly, the piece feels to me like it was dashed together from about one hour of Googling in order to meet a deadline. (I'm a former newspaper reporter and editor; one of the topics I've covered was asbestos abatement and removal.)

Problems:

1. Title and Subhead: "The Trump Administration Is Not Bringing Back Asbestos: And couldn’t, even if it wanted to." Catchy. But unsupported. Change some EPA regulations here, some federal liability laws there, and it's perfectly possible. These may well have been written by someone other than the reporter (that's common practice); but still.

2. Graf 8: "The decision represents an about-face from 2016, when the TSCA—the law too weak to justify the asbestos ban and phase out—was strengthened in Congress." Odd. For the title, the subhead, and the first seven grafs, the reporter is telling the reader this asbestos thing is all much-ado about nothing. Now, for the next two fact-filled grafs, he almost reluctantly divulges to the reader that the Trump administration has been undoing legislation that made the use of asbestos so difficult.

3. Graf 9: "In May, Trump’s EPA announced it would not investigate indirect exposure to those chemicals, including in air or water." The significance of this seems to escape the reporter. What the EPA itself has stated is that indirect exposure would no longer be considered a factor in determining the safety of a proposed application of the mineral. This is alarming, and sets the stage for EPA approval of many new uses of asbestos. Yet the reporter glosses right over it.

4. Graf 10: "All that said, it’s extremely unlikely that companies will be chomping at the bit to put asbestos back into your house." In a weird, inverted emphasis, the reporter now pooh-poohs the most important information regarding asbestos regulation in his own story, essentially saying, "Naaaaaaaah. Not gonna happen. Cuz lawsuits." What the reporter fails to appreciate is that this is not one company's efforts. This is an effort led by the White House and the EPA. With a Republican-controlled Congress, any number or federal laws can be revised or jettisoned to make it difficult to sue for asbestos-related damages going forward.

Also, and this is trivial, the expression is "champing at the bit," not "chomping." Sorry: My editor's pen is kicking in here.

* * *

At this point, you might be wondering who the reporter is. I know I was. Henry Grabar, according to Slate, is a staff writer for Slate's "Moneybox." What is Moneybox? According to Slate, it is "A blog about business and economics." Judging by this story, Mr. Grabar's expertise in the areas of law and science and asbestos is a bit thin.

My two cents, as they say.

And thank you for taking the time to read my comment. I hope more do. This is a disturbing development. It is hard not to conclude that the president and his EPA administrator are acting not in the interests of the United States, but in the interests of the world's largest asbestos exporter, which happens to be Russia.

Kudos to Yui Yoshida for sounding the alarm. This story needs to get out there.

It seems to me they've resorted to more clickbait over the years. I used to be a paid member but I canceled a while ago after some of their better writers left. I think your assessment of this article is correct. My feeling was while it may be technically correct that isn't a ban, that's really not relevant. Trump's maneuvers clearly warrant concern.

This particular story is illustrative, I think, of the fact that a nice layout, a good choice of the display font for the headers, and some good photos can be deceiving. You see a final product that looks smart and polished and you tend to assume the writing is top-notch and has been gone over by an editor with some experience in the subject. Yet that is often not the case. Were I editing the piece for publication, I would've sent it back to the author with the problems I've detailed: "Not ready for publication; please address these points."

Mesothelioma is the cancer that asbestos produces.

Zevon didn't know how he got it, but his son thought his dad got it from playing in the attic of an old house as a kid. Merlin Olsen, a Mormon who never smoked or drank, thought he got it from working on old film sets that were rife with asbestos.

Asbestos is bad stuff.
