The President of the United States admitted, on the record, that he misled the American people about the infamous Russia meeting in Trump Tower.

The big picture: It’s one of the most striking public reversals in modern presidential history, even though he made a similar point before, and even though it was done casually via an early morning tweet. It involves Russia, Air Force One, a presidential son, shady operatives, allegations of collusion and a federal probe — all in one.

Trump tweeted: "Fake News reporting, a complete fabrication, that I am concerned about the meeting my wonderful son, Donald, had in Trump Tower. This was a meeting to get information on an opponent, totally legal and done all the time in politics - and it went nowhere. I did not know about it!"

This is the same president who dictated a statement to the media saying the meeting was about primarily about the adoption of Russian children, not campaign dirt offered by shady Russians with connections to Putin.

And then a bit more than a month later, Wikileaks began doing the same.

Close Trump confidante Roger Stone (and former business partner of Trumps Campaign Chair, Paul Manafort) was in contact with Wikileaks and knew in advance that Podesta's (stolen by Russia) emails were to be shortly released, among other things he said that indicated advanced warning of what Wikileaks had planned.

Then Trump trumpeted Wikileaks over 140 times on the campaign trail, even though the documents they were posting were CLEARLY stolen (and there signs it was done by Russia even then, hence his "Russia If You're Listening" remark).

Per the Wiki on DCLeaks, at that point, the leaks had already started:

With the WikiLeaks disclosure of additional stolen emails beginning on July 22, 2016, more than 150,000 stolen emails from either personal Gmail addresses or via the DNC that were related to the Hillary Clinton 2016 Presidential campaign were published on the DCLeaks and WikiLeaks websites.

Though it might be useful to consider whether the NATURE of the info leaked ... changed as of 7/27/16. I'm sure Mueller is 'on that'.

The Steele dossier says that he sent an audiotape to one of Putin's agents (maybe it was delivered by Michael Cohen?) where he said he would lift the sanctions if he got elected. THAT was done in the summer of 2016 very soon after the meeting at Trump Tower.

"Russia if you're listening" he said later, I think it was in one of the debates, or at a rally just before the debates. You're correct that it was later on, the DNC emails had already been stolen by then. The deed was done!

A person or co-conspirator of a much larger crime or conspiracy involving multiple crimes, admits to the (perceived) least "offense" involved in the overall coverup of the crimes in their entirety. Basically, his defense is that the meeting wasn't a crime just because it took place, because "everyone campaigning for office in the history of politics has always sought so-called 'opposition research" info on their opponents, and that's not illegal". That seems to be his new tack.

Problem with that is that it IS illegal to meet with a hostile foreign government representative hoping to obtain from them such information, especially when there were provable consequences from that meeting forthcoming and damaging to the opponent of the person seeking the "opposition research". And Mueller has that proof. All of it.
