Contact your State House of Representative and Senator.
Then keep on following up with them.
I know I am going to do that.
I figure if this crooked underhanded scam is brought to light then the whole Repukelican party will distance themselves from it rather than get caught smelling from the stink.

(6,252 posts)This has been coming for a LONG time. Knew the Koch Brothers and ALEC were trying to get State Legislatures to call for a Constitutional Convention. Can states withdraw their requests? Scary stuff.

(2,959 posts)convention. Every post high school history/political science instruction has warned just as seriously. Charlie Pierce write eloquently and informatively about a possible Constitutional Convention. I wish Mahr had been able to let her talk more freely and expansively on this subject but he's got to garner ratings and move the show along. So I'll be buying and reading her book. I hope most Democratic Party candidates either read it or have an aid read and brief them on it.

(4,356 posts)Nancy MacLean is pin point accurate that destroying the protections for all Americans held within our centuries old constitution has been and is the long-term goal of the far right. tRumps (Russian manipulated) election, the divisions within the Democratic Party and the takeover of state governments have been, until now, successful take-over far right strategies. Will patriotic Americans allow this to continue until we no longer recognize the true America? At this time, at this midterm election, we must muster the strength to win every possible vote as if our lives and our country as we know it, depends upon it. Because it does!!!

(37,648 posts)This gets me furious. And scared.
We can't stop the Kavanaugh confirmation, though. And they arranged with Kennedy for him to retire.
OMG. We absolutely need to win in the mid-terms. If Russia screws up and doesn't fix things again.

(47,488 posts)And, again, I was thinking that while we concentrate on Russia (which according to some poll many do not care) and #MeToo, the Republicans, let by Koch are working on changing our country for generations.

(15,627 posts)A Constitutional Convention can only PROPOSE amendments, it cannot ratify them.
The ratification process (either through congress or state legislatures) remains unchanged.

(60,010 posts)The truth is that the proponents for changing the Constitution are very well organized, and they will not go to the expense and trouble of proposing any amendments unless they think the votes are there to ratify.
It remains an issue we have not been talking about, at any level.
what we can do now is start talking about it often so it can't continue to fly under the radar.

(3,629 posts)Theatrically she was trying a bit too hard, trying to cram as much info as she could into her screen time and Bill was having a bit of trouble dealing with that. As much as he wants the show to be informative even if it's alarming, it has to foremost be entertaining even when the entertainment is "OMG we're all going to die." Her message was on-point though which is why she needs to learn to deliver it a bit more smoothly. I hope Bill gives her some pointers and brings her back.
Realistically I thing the Constitutional Convention isn't yet a real threat; even if one is somehow convened its amendments would face stiff hurdles to getting enacted. This is, as Nancy says, a long game and we're still in the early innings of it. Let's work on the 2018 midterms and see how things look in December.

(2,275 posts)With a 5-4 majority, they can make rulings that will keep Republicans in power permanently, shut down the Mueller investigation, etc. It feels to me that if this is a long game, were well into it. They have been strategizing about this for decades and are playing to win, going so far as to collude with a hostile foreign government to help them reach their goals.

(58,785 posts)always fought to reinterpret the constitution because the liberalism and progressivism it enshrines as our working principles must be removed if they are to prevail.
"There is ultimately no clearer underlying distinction between conservatives and liberals than their view on "the concept of equality of all men." This psychological reality underlies most of today's political divisions.
These people's main goal above all is to destroy equality of all men as our core, guiding principle. From equality comes the concepts of government of, by and for the people -- all the people-- and of inalienable human rights.
Strong conservatives by nature simply do not agree with any of it. It feels wrong to them. This type of conservatism is merely a gut thing, an emotional reaction without defined principles and intellectual foundation. They know people aren't equal. How silly of us. Inalienable rights are what protect criminals from punishment and allow Satan to take over America.
Nor, very dangerously, do strong conservatives even believe in the concept of government of, by and for all the people. Again, it's because they do not believe in equality and see elites as more suited to govern. Strong conservatives are comfortable with the need to kiss up and ability to kick down as just part of the natural order.
(The underlines for "strong" are because many moderate conservatives do very much believe in the principles our democracy is based on, which would not have been possible without them.)
So, look at this list and, even though these Trojan horse goals may seem practical and limited as stated, they are anything but. Their goals to are to reinterpret the constitution to replace equality with inequality, inalienable rights with questionable and alienable, and transfer of power of all the people to serve themselves to elite classes, and thus an end to progressivism in government and embedding of authoritarian government with its foot firmly on the neck of the people.
The eleven amendments proposed by Levin:
1. Impose Congressional term limits
2. Repeal the Seventeenth Amendment, returning the election of Senators to state legislatures
3. Impose term limits for Supreme Court Justices and restrict judicial review
5. Require a balanced budget and limit federal spending and taxation
5. Define a deadline to file taxes (one day before the next federal election)
6. Subject federal departments and bureaucratic regulations to periodic reauthorization and review
7. Create a more specific definition of the Commerce Clause
8. Limit eminent domain powers
9. Allow states to more easily amend the Constitution by bypassing Congress
10. Create a process where two-thirds of the states can nullify federal laws
11. Require photo ID to vote and limit early voting
