Hawaii volcano eruption: 'Just a matter of time' before Kilauea lava swallows beauty spot

It come as firefighters continue to battle brushfires caused as lava ignites dry vegetation in the south-east of the island.

Axel Kratel has been instrumental in the rescue of numerous domestic and farm animals trapped by lava in remote corners in the south east of Big Island since the start of the latest phase of eruptive activity on May 3, as part of an ongoing efforts to protect its environment.

But he told Express.co.uk it was “just a matter” before Poihoiki, which is threatened by lava which has “stalled” just 500 feet away, was inundated, as well as the popular Isaac Hale boat ramp which is much-used by tourists.

He said: “Pohoiki is one of the gems of Puna, which is the south-east corner of the island which includes Kilauea.

Over 10,000 acres burned and choking smoke from the brush fires, the lava flows continuing to change the landscape and displace people, and an approaching hurricane of possible category 3 strength.

The relentless eruption of the Kilauea Volcano's lower East Rift Zone continues its rampage through the southeastern corner of the Big Island of Hawaii, with lava claiming a popular site for oceanside soaking and a local school.

"An overflight this morning has confirmed that Ahalanui Park and Kua O Ka La School have been covered by lava," the Hawai‘i County Civil Defense Agency reported Thursday.

The Ahalanui County Beach Park, also known as Maunakea Pond or "the Hot Ponds," consisted of volcanically heated ponds with a mix of ocean and spring water along the rocky shore.

Lava began erupting from a series of fissures in the rift zone over nine weeks ago, destroying much of the Leilani Estates subdivision. In recent weeks, the activity has centered on fissure 8, which is feeding a continuous flow of lava down to the ocean. On its initial march down to the Pacific, lava evaporated and covered the island's largest freshwater lake before filling in the picturesque Kapoho Bay.

The pink/red area is the advance of the lava since the beginning of May, as of 8/3/18. The Pohoiki area is between the two lava inundated areas on the lower right.
