Well, I am going to tear up a bit, then when my eyes clear I will watch it a few more times.
Thank you so much, AmandaRuth.

(3,105 posts)brings back so much, lost it with M Ali, than switching to color with Emma .., omg i've watched at least 10 times
edit: on lost it, it mean, that's when the tears came....

(83,791 posts)I felt like I was watching in real life. The line of the children leaving the school after the shooting. The children in color, yet their shadows black...dead children walking one moment could be the next shadow.
The transition to Martin of color to Emma in color. Wow. Just wow.

(4,787 posts)The video is a collaboration between Graham Nash and celebrated filmmaker and animator Jeff Scher.
The imagery frames the youth-led liberal activism of 2018 against the backdrop of the Civil Rights Movement and Peace demonstrations of the 1960's, providing a powerful visual aid to Graham Nash's relevant-as-ever appeal to teach not only our children but also our parents well.
I wrote Teach Your Children because we have much to teach them. Conversely, I believe we as parents have much to learn from them as well. I think that Jeff Scher did a wonderful job of animating my lyrics and positioning the song in a contemporary setting." - Graham Nash (2018)

(58,724 posts)It was written by Graham Nash and performed by him, Stills, and Crosby on the album (Neil Young does not appear on the song).

(42 posts)But the poster gave him a mention. Neil doesn't get the respect he deserves, so it was a prime opportunity for some props.

(5,106 posts)I have the original from that time and actually used it, along with some other songs of the era, in introducing poetry in my English classes (as did many other teachers of my generation). Taking nothing away from the great Neil Young, he was not involved in this collaboration.

No biggie. It's a great video and remains a great tune.

(4,033 posts)That really hit me right where I live. No funny comments about onions, that imagery coupled with the song made me cry. I'm old enough to have lived through ALL the imagery depicted, from Freedom Riders to Birmingham Sunday, to the Pettus Bridge. I was a student at Ohio State when Kent State happened just a couple of hours north.
It is an unending battle we thought we had at least made progress on. Now just dig out your oldies:
Peter, Paul and Mary - Where Have All the Flowers Gone
Joan Baez/Malvina Reynolds - What Have They Done to the Rain
Pete Seeger - I Ain't Scared of Your Jail
and (hopefully):
Bob Dylan - The Times They Are a'Changing

(2,692 posts)But he lost the edge and the desire to write because politics just became too dark for him.
But he wrote songs for That Was The Week That Was, an extremely popular show which was "bought off the air" by the Goldwater campaign during the '64 campaign. Barry's people were, apparently, afraid of it's connection with the people and its ability to subject to ridicule the mendacity and foolishness of what was the actual "conservative" cause. Lehrer's songs played a big role in the show.
He also wrote for Sesame Street!

(2,143 posts)Thank you for posting the video. I've loved that song all these decades, from the time of its release. I've even sung it a time or two with my beat up old guitar. The animations are perfect, spot on, tell such a moving saga. It moved me to tears, as it did to others who posted here, and no doubt many others.

(16,646 posts)there's alot of protest music from the '60s. Everything from We Shall Overcome to Ohio. Peter Paul and Mary sang their share, as did the Smothers Brothers and Tom Paxton. I've often wondered if in these times we'd see the rise again of protest music.

(1,325 posts)His touch on the pedal steel was different. And his sense of melody and harmony remarkable. He laid down the track essentially for free. All he asked in return was for some voice lessons for the Dead as they had a hard time singing harmonies and Jerry thought it seemed like a fair deal. And wah lah the steel guitar makes the song in my opinion.

(6,556 posts)I remember thinking, "Why are we doing this? If they drop the bomb on us being under our desks will not save us." That was frightening for elementary aged children then. I cannot believe that our children today are facing terrorists with guns and bombs entering their classrooms. What horrors our children face just going to school today. Equally horrible is the fact that the people we put in power are unwilling to defend our children's lives.

(23,105 posts)Weird, my husband and I were listening to that cd while we were on the road yesterday and discussing the band members, their voices, the great songs and that this was one of our favorites. This catches the mood of the anti-war movement from when they were starting out to the Resistance of today in an excellent manner.
