Sens. Tom Carper, D-Delaware, and Elizabeth Warren, D-Massachusetts, and House Oversight and Government Reform Ranking Member Elijah E. Cummings, D-Maryland, requested an investigation of expenses incurred by the Secret Service and the State Department during President Donald Trumps recent trip to the Trump Turnberry, a luxury golf resort in Scotland that the president owns.
In letters to the inspectors general for the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of State, the lawmakers noted that Trump made no public appearances and played two rounds of golf during his stay at Trump Turnberry prior to the Helsinki Summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin. The trip is reportedly set to cost American taxpayers up to $1.2 million, with potentially more than $100,000 in taxpayer dollars going directly to Trump Turnberry.
This is not the first time that President Trump and his familys choice of travel accommodations have resulted in exceptionally high costs, the members wrote. During his first year in office, his frequent weekend trips to his golf resorts in Mar-a-Lago, Florida; Bedminster, New Jersey; and Potomac Falls, Virginia, led to a severe depletion of the Secret Services budget. The agencys bills included at least $137,000 spent renting golf carts at golf courses owned by President Trump. Recent reporting also found that in one month alone, the Secret Service spent nearly $250,000 to protect the presidents adult sons, Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., as they travelled to Dubai to open a Trump-brand golf club and other foreign destinations ...
