for those who don't know Harry Potter:
Pronunciation: sec-tum-SEMP-rah
Description: A dark spell that creates large, blood-oozing gashes on the subject as if said subject had been "slashed by a sword". Invented by Severus Snape.

(2,313 posts)The sad part is, that if you gave Trumpers this multiple-choice quiz:
Which president ordered the successful assassination of Osama bin Laden?
A. Barack Obama
B. Donald J. Trump
85 percent would get it wrong. At least 85 percent.
They refuse to acknowledge reality.

But I wanted to better understand the correct usage.
Reading this page, several times heh, leads me to think "whom" is correct...
https://www.grammarbook.com/grammar/whoVwhom.asp
Does the he/him method indicate this test:
"amongst us is him" not "is he."
I'm so confused !!
RVN VET71
(2,694 posts)"Among us" is a prepositional phrase, so "us", as the object of the preposition "among" is appropriate, instead of "we".
The predicate is -- bear with me now because grammar is as tedious as you probably thought -- ". . . can forget."
The subject of that predicate is "Who."
Want more? I know you don't, but I can't help myself: The prepositional phrase "among us" acts as an adjective modifying, or further describing, the noun "who" which, as the subject of the predicate, is in the nominative case.
Finally, Ms Rowling almost certainly let slip the grammatical error because of the subtle brain-draining vibrations given out by the idiot to whom she was responding.

(28,082 posts)and, apparently, neither can the grammar check in Word. Many times I've tried out a sentence with both "who" and "whom" and either way it tells me everything is okay. (Or maybe that rule is too hard to program?)
