US House candidate, CA-49

I am thrilled to announce that @BarackObama has endorsed our campaign for Congress in #CA49. Together, we must bend the arc of history back towards justice.

For those unfamiliar, this covers the wealthy southern end of Orange County and northern end of San Diego County. Lots of far-right Republicans who wail about the "browning of America" - while their Mexican maids, nannies, landscapers, and painters toil in the background.

Still, Doug Applegate almost won last time (probably did, but for Issa shenanigans with the vote count). People do change - even if gradually.

Say hello to San Clemente and Laguna for me, Shred. I miss them so.

ASS-I (Issa spelled backwards) is not running.

Levin will win in San Diego County, but Orange County is the
big question mark. They are staunch R's in the OC.

While there are many exceptions, frankly the typical south Orange Cunty-ite is uber-racist, radicalized, and above all, nouveau-riche.

They seem to think having a $500,000 or million-dollar home makes them Rockefellers (and it's hard to find anything for under $500,000 in that area - especially near the ocean).

I emphasize south Orange County because everything north of the 55 has become more like L.A. county in recent decades - including becoming a lot more Democratic. Even Vietnamese voters have been trending Democratic.

A far cry from the Bob "nuke'em all" Dornan era.

All the Best to Mike Levin. I still think Doug Applegate was our best shot, seeing as he was a former Marine and '16 was, of course, a presidential year. Could still happen though!

From folks who attended events.

He comes across as an asshole and “republican-like”.
My friends who have met him didn’t care for him.

Of course, Issa is the flip side of that: the guy's slicker than his hair.

I've never met Applegate, as I left several years ago; but I did once meet Issa, during his 2000 primary run, I think.

The little bastard was like a cross between the Shah of Iran and the Joker. I remember he used another man's photo in placards he placed all along the major boulevards, to try to prevent anyone from noticing he's Middle-Eastern.

There are, as you know, a lot of Middle Eastern folks in that district - and most white voters don't care for them.

But then, he engineered Gray Davis' ouster - so all was forgiven.

I remember the time when, during the '96 campaign against Loretta Sanchez, the little runt went around in his van absconding with every issue of the OC Weekly he could find.

They had run an exposé on him, with first-hand accounts of just how fanatical and racist he was in private. I'm sure it was even worse than that.

Unfortunately, while the Garden Grove Garbage is no longer gracing Congress with his presence, they are many thousands of far-right Republicans in the OC who look - and think - very much like him.

Every bit Hillary's deplorables.

he's still out there at 85.

Can't believe he's been out of office for over 20 years but he was one of the best known RW loons before the current RW loon crop came in.

in San Diego County. It isn't just Southern OC. Northern San Diego County (especially the beach areas) has $1mil + homes (average prices as of 2018 below).

San Diego County:
Vista, CA = 536,200
Carlsbad, CA = 848,500
Oceanside, CA = 530,000
Encinitas, CA = 1,025,100
Solana Beach = 1,338,000
Del Mar, CA = 2,618,700

Southern OC:
San Clemente, CA = 953,400
Dana Point, CA = 936,700

Most of the 49th is similar in that regard; I only mentioned south Orange County as that's where I lived for a decade, and that's the part of the 49th I'm most familiar with (love Carlsbad, Oceanside, and Escondido though!).

Lots of fond memories. A little heartbreak too - but that's life.

Many years ago there was talk, and even a referendum I think, to combine the cities of Encinitas and Carlsbad to give them more clout. The running joke on the radio was....

wait for it...

The new city would be named Carnitas !

That's great!

Reminds me of the time, around '05, they voted to change the name of Leisure World. The reason?

They got tired of everyone calling it (as you may know) 'Seizure World'.

Good luck to Mike Levin - the polling agencies have this as a Lean-Democrat race the last I saw.
