https://www.politico.com/story/2018/08/01/biden-trump-2020-elections-752979Former Vice President Joe Biden leads President Donald Trump by 7 percentage points in a head-to-head match-up, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll.
A plurality of registered voters, 44 percent, said theyd choose Biden in the 2020 presidential election, while 37 percent of voters said they would vote for Trump.
The percentage of Democrats who would choose Biden 80 percent was slightly higher than the 78 percent of Republicans who would vote for the presidents reelection. The former vice president, who ran for the White House in 1988 and 2008, has been floated as a 2020 contender, and Biden himself has said hes not ruling out a third try.
Morning Consult surveyed 1,993 registered voters from July 26 to July 30 for its newest poll released Wednesday.
Biden holds a less-than-commanding position within his own party: Among Democrats, an unnamed generic Democrat runs 9 points better than Biden in a match-up with Trump. "Notably, 89 percent of Democrats say they would vote for a generic Democrat over Trump, but only 80 percent of Democrats say they prefer Biden over Trump, said Morning Consult Managing Director Tyler Sinclair.

(82 posts)That says an awful lot about America in 2018. Emphasis on the word awful.

(6,231 posts)We have a long way to go. Of course we will be hearing from those who like to yell about how we need young folks. Yes we do need young folks, but we also need experience. The Dems do support progressive ideas. We just haven't had the environment to get those ideas put into bills and passed. I watched in horror as the country moved right and voted for the repubs election after election going back decades. Now finally the country has moved left. Biden will attack and bring up ideas that will be popular. We need electoral wins and then we can work to make the changes we want for the country.

(6,377 posts)There's no way that 1 out of ever 5 voting Democrats would choose NOT to vote for the Democratic nominee. On the same line of thought, there's no way only 78 percent of people who voted for Trump last time would vote for him again. If he only got 78 percent of his 2016 vote, he'd be wiped out in one of the biggest electoral landslides we've ever seen.

(30,816 posts)A good chunk of Trump voters in 2016 were simply anti-Hillary and/or wanted a big change.
They have learned their lesson and will vote for the Dem in 2020, if we don't totally screw things up.

(43,258 posts)Biden is in good shape for his age, by any measure.
Trump is only going to atrophy.

(7,142 posts)I cringe when I see posts or conversations about Trump and 2020. The mere suggestion that he will be on the ballot in 2020 makes me puke and gives Trump too much credibility.
My response is that Trump is already being rated as one of the worst presidents ever, why even think about giving him a second term?

(4,720 posts)its time to let go of the past. We need a strong, young, charismatic, progressive candidate to rally behind. If nothing changes, nothing changes.

(13,305 posts)We need to move on. We need young blood.
Yes, in a perfect world experience and gravitas and qualifications would be what gets someone elected and gives them the best chance and all of that.
But as we saw in 2016 that is not the case. Doubling down on and complaining about how unfair it is, doesn't change the game itself.
We need to accept that and we need to move forward.
President Obama did not have a wealth of experience and he did just fine both electorally and as President.

(62,533 posts)I will never ever forgive him for what he did to the bankruptcy laws (that basically screwed everyone in this nation who was in debt) and what he did to Anita Hill by voting to confirm thomas.

(31,261 posts)Why do some people look back 20-25 years at everything some democrats were involved with, even indirectly, and don't want to look back even two months to look at something Bernie did or said? Why is that? Plus, Bernie has something like a 30 year plus voting record that has a lot of rocks on it, just like Biden did votes or efforts that he likely would not do today.
Honestly, I hope neither Biden or Bernie run, we need to move on to the next generation of leaders.

(62,533 posts)thomas is still a deciding vote on the supreme court and was a sexual predator. biden gave him a pass.
the lack of transparent in present bankruptcy laws now on the books was due to biden who authored the bill. biden then senator of Maryland, home of virtually all credit card companies, bowed to their will to continue his campaign for senate and take their money to fund same. he put the concerns of credit card corporations before the needs of the people.
both of these issues still effect us all in many many negative ways to this very day.
if you think 20-25 years ago was a long time ago and shouldn't matter, perhaps then laws that were enacted 100 to 200 years ago, shouldn't matter either, right?
he was directly responsible for both situations and I will never ever forgive him.

(31,261 posts)A crime bill that unintentionally turned America into a prison industrial state for POC.
Mastered through Congress a bill that dumped medical nuclear waste near a poor Texas Latino community that did not want it.
Has repeatedly voted against action against Russia.
Why are so just focusing on Biden. Do you even pay attention to what he has said for several years about the Hill hearing and bankruptcy laws? Or would that blow up your narrative?

please explain how exactly that is hypocrisy?
I know full well of Bernie's flaws, but last time I checked, Hillary was the candidate, or did you miss that part?
also I find it really amusing that you seem obsessed with Bernie, not me. since this thread, originally was about biden and you chose to take the odd turn and make it about Bernie.
and it seems now that you have to fight the other posters odd fight.
everyone needs a hobby I guess.

(16,973 posts)anti-Biden spam. Maybe you missed that part, but it was very recognizable. I had asked if we could spam anti-Bernie articles or if it was just a one-way street about Biden.
The Biden concern was very recognizable. We need to be vigilant about not letting our Democrats be thrashed while one person is exalted. That didn't work last time, or at least candidates should be vetted equally.
Yes, reading about politics is quite a "hobby", isn't it??

(31,261 posts)For some, that is easier than debating one's position, even as that position shifts like a pile of flour in an earthquake. I have been proven wrong a lot, sometimes proven right, but one thing I have never done or will do is set someone to ignore to avoid a debate.

(4,642 posts)a very disastrous bill for the working class, so never was a fan of VP Biden but I will vote for him just the same. At the time, politicians were supposed to be the voice of everyone, even banksters. Those days are gone, everything now goes to the 1%. I'm hoping we get some serious fresh faces running, someone with enough fire to give the fascists hell, so tired of weak, lets all get along BS. Would love to see HRC run again but wouldn't blame her if she just said to hell with it.

(14,586 posts)a 'generic' Democrat does 9 points better than Biden.
What this tells us is that Biden should probably not run.

(7,447 posts)is that there is no frontrunner for Dems this time around.
There are over half a dozen folks with a legit shot at getting the nomination.
Biden, Harris, Booker, Sanders, Warren, someone no one is thinking about yet, and probably 2-3 other names I'm not thinking about right at this moment.
And a "generic" candidate almost always beats a named/known candidate at this point in a race.
