Members of Congress should be able to work together to protect houses of worship from having to pay taxes, especially in an election year when both parties want to earn the faith communitys vote.
In an era of pervasive partisan politics, however, not even that is a guarantee.
Some Republicans do want to tweak a portion of their 2017 tax bill that will now force nonprofits, including churches, to pay a 21 percent tax on the value of certain employee benefits. But most others downplay the problem or deny it needs to be addressed.
Assistant House Minority Leader Jim Clyburn of South Carolina is rallying Democrats around new legislation to repeal the provision.

Not LBN so I'm putting it in here. I'm sure the Repugs will try to blame this on the Democrats during the mid-terms, but they have to be held to account. One more thing to hammer their base on. I personally believe churches should be taxed on non-charitable revenue (corporate jets, for instance).

(6,709 posts)with churches paying taxes. They benefit as much as any organization from infrastructure so they should pay for it via property taxes, sales taxes, whatever. And they should pay tax on any income not spent on charitable activities.
And if they push ANY kind of political agenda they should lose their exemption altogether.

That's how you pay for universal health care... I don't think the church would mind helping people, eh?
