Perhaps It's an attempt to zig when everyone expects a zag. Don't run away, but rather run into storm of bipartisan criticism (and it has been a storm) of Trump's last, deeply flawed appearance with Putin. Even Trump's own intelligence chief said Tuesday he didn't know what happened behind closed doors in Helsinki with the two men and their translators. The Russians seem to think there was some kind of military deal struck. Trump hasn't talked about it.
Maybe they think the best way for Trump to undo the damage from his first meeting is to replace it with a stronger second summit.
Perhaps it's just an old-fashioned attempt to change the subject. Will news coverage suddenly shift from the debacle in Helsinki and its reverberations to what will happen this fall? It seems more likely that this new development, if Putin accepts, will keep the story in the headlines even longer.
It could also -- and this is the most wily and fanciful possible reason of all -- be that Trump sees value in the blanket of critique he's faced from officials....

Wannabe strongman tRump may be doing it just to show everybody that he's the strongman boss of everything who is not going to apologize for his Helsinki disaster which was, of course, a YUGE SUCCESS.
Or he's been compromised all along and now putin is expecting more if he doesn't want the kompromat to get out.
He criticizes everyone except putin and Avenatti. Notice how he doesn't directly pounce on Cohen. He just says the recording could be illegal. They've got the goods.

(5,810 posts)When they met in Helsinki, Putin gave him his orders and like a good soldier, he is carrying them out. Makes sense to me. Now all he has to do is keep drumming it in our heads that this is all normal. Dont we want to get along with Rusher....ah, Russia??

Trump never grew up. Now he's an egomaniac who displays most of the symptoms of ADHD. He's a danger to himself and others.
Avoids, dislikes, or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental effort Trump has asked his staff to keep his daily briefings short, and fill them with killer graphics whenever possible. I like bullets, or I like as little as possible, Trump said in an interview before his inauguration. I dont need, you know, 200-page reports on something that can be handled on a page.
Talks excessively The President has been known to give long-winded speeches that stray widely from his prepared remarks, though this is hardly a unique trait among politicians. Hes also a habitual tweeter, often going on late-night Tweetstorms regarding whatevers on his mind (or on TV) that day.
Blurts out the answers before the questions have been completed Trump often speaks without clearing it with his team, which has led to some scrambling on the part of the White House. He once told the Associated Press that a tax reform plan would be rolled out in the next five days; his aides, however, were unaware of this and had no such intentions. The reason your head is spinning on this is that the plan isnt even written yet, one senior White House official said shortly after Trumps remarks.
Has difficulty awaiting turn During a NATO meeting earlier this year, Trump was caught on video shoving the Prime Minister of Montenegro in an apparent bid to get to the front of the group of world leaders. On the day of his Inauguration, he was also criticized for leaving behind his wife, Melania Trump, as he eagerly bounded out of their shared limousine.

(16,375 posts)Putin is set to steal the midterms for the Trumpublicans and the two of them will review the troops on Veterans Day in celebration of their mutual victory. It's part of the deal they made during their alone time in Helsinki.
Is this just my supposition? Of course.
Do I believe it's extremely likely? Unfortunately, yes.
