Its impossible to know how President Trumps disastrous news conference with Vladimir Putin today in Helsinki will impact his approval rating or the upcoming midterm elections.
In one way, this seems little different than previous controversies. When Trump criticized Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) for being captured in Vietnam or blamed both sides for the racist violence in Charlottesville, neither incident seemed to matter after a few days. Trumps approval rate, while still historically low, has been extremely steady. But in another way, Trump performance completely undermines the idea that hes is a tough president. Everything we saw today from his body language to his words suggests hes deferential to Putin. He actually seemed scared of him.
Weve heard regularly from pollsters that Trump supporters dont like his bad behavior or crazy tweets, but they still think hes tough and fighting for them. They believe hes going to make America great again. Those attributes are fundamental to his appeal.
Trump may have undermined more than the country today. He may have also undermined his support.

(10,173 posts)Infowars - which Zuckerberg still doesn't see fit to banish from his platform - thanked Russia for interfering in the elections. The last pew research poll I saw showed rising support for Putin among Republicans ( I think it was at 34% last I checked)
It's amazing how tribalism can warp the mind and shut out cognitive dissonance. For many of them, Trump pissing off the libs is worth it:

(52,306 posts)he was so non-alpha that he actually jumped, startled, when al gore casually walked over towards him during one of the debates, even though that was a widely predicted and normal thing to happen, a standard presidential debate move to highlight al gore's height.
i thought for sure that would cost shrub, but the media actually turned on al gore for invading shrub's space (the same media that widely predicted he would do exactly what he did).
cheney rolled all over him throughout his administration as well.
republicans don't care, they're loyal to the top dog no matter what.
