LONDON For months, British officials laid plans to make sure that President Trump, a fan of ornate housing, will see a castle or two Theresa May, Britains prime minister, has only a few hours to warm up Mr. Trump on defense and trade issues, and to remind him of the value of the special relationship between the United States and Britain, while he is here on a whirlwind, mostly-by-helicopter stay.
By welcoming Mr. Trump to Blenheim, Mrs. May and other senior officials are pulling out the stops to try to dazzle a president who they know likes dazzle. But before the night was even over, Mr. Trump, in an interview with The Sun, criticized Mrs. Mays approach to Brexit.
The evening began with a ceremony featuring Scottish, Irish and Welsh guards playing Amazing Grace. The four trumpeters were from the Household Cavalry Band, which played for the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. They wore pure gold cloaks worn only in the presence of the queen or a head of state.
The dinner menu: Scottish salmon and English Hereford beef fillet, followed by strawberries and clotted-cream ice cream.

And the former model was dressed appropriately for the occasion: wearing an American designer - J.Mendel - to fly her country's fashion flag abroad. But there was something about the flowing buttercup yellow chiffon gown that looked familiar to some, drawing comparisons with Belle from Beauty and the Beast among some other fictional characters.
While some were quick to praise her commitment to making a dramatic entrance, others pointed out that it was strikingly similar to the now-iconic dress in the final scene of the Disney film.

(90,767 posts)Oh, I felt the exact same way about all who have done so. No exceptions.
You roll out the red carpet for someone like Trump and he'll take a shit on it. No sense in pretending he has done something unexpected.
Don't feign outrage, because you're either a fool or a liar to do so.
You're certainly not doing it for my sake or my country's sake (and you for damn sure aren't helping your own country any) - and hoping to gain anything from Trump by flattering him is monumentally stupid.
He has already made his mind up about you and nothing you do will change it. He won't be impressed - because he looks down on you and feels what effort you make is only what he deserves. The master never thanks the servant for merely doing what is expected.
He'll mock you later - worse, he'll mock you to Putin later.

(18,837 posts)American journalist in Japan gets unprecedented access deep inside the Yakuza. VERY highly recommended.
In one chapter, the author discusses the "new recruits," who basically fetch drinks for the bosses and do other menial tasks.
Grunt brings boss a drink, anxiously awaits favorable response. Boss sips drink and is very careful to have no response at all, and to not acknowledge the grunt. Grunt then slowly slithers away and returns to menial tasks. Any positive affirmations from the boss only instills confidence in the grunt, and in the boss' mind, that is not deserved and therefore is never granted.
Somewhat like what you described.
