4 Red State Democrats Turn Down Trump Invitation To SCOTUS Pick Announcement
Red state Democratic Sens. Joe Donnelly (Indiana), Joe Manchin (West Virginia). Heidi Heitkamp (North Dakota), and Doug Jones (Alabama) were invited by Trump to attend his Supreme Court nominee announcement at the White House. They all turned him down.

Democrats are showing a united front
The Trump brand is so damaged, and Democratic incumbents are generally doing so much better than expected in many of these red states, that the Democrats dont have to beat a path to the White House. Republicans are especially disappointed that Manchin and Heitkamp have looked so strong in their reelection campaigns. Not going to the White House is not the same as not voting for the nominee, but the message being loudly sent to the White House is that Trump will not be able to count on any Democratic votes to get his Supreme Court nominee confirmed.
The Republican Partys whole strategy since Trump took office has been to try pressure red state Democrats into supporting this president. It hasnt worked before, and it isnt working now. If Trump wants to destroy Roe v. Wade, he will have to do it with Republican votes, because so far, Democrats are showing zero interest in playing along.

(13,305 posts)I'm the first to criticize when they are cowardly or just buckle under the slightest pressure from the right, so I should be the loudest voice praising them when they do something right. Very happy to see this.
I'm hopeful this is a sign of how they will vote as well, but we'll see. One step at a time.

(82,849 posts)I am certainly no slouch when it comes to criticizing Manchin and Heitkamp, but it's important to back them when they do the right thing, as here. If you're in West Virginia or North Dakota, give their office a call and leave a message that you approve of their turning down an invitation to be a stage prop for Trump's grandstanding.

They do tend to get busy, though. Inthat case, I recommend looking up one of their regional offices and weigh in there. Extra points if you have a good friend or relative living in one of those states.

(194 posts)Democrats cannot stop Kavanaugh's confirmation. Hearings will be Kabuki theater with Trump's extremist puppet ducking and weaving any direct statement of positions on past SCOTUS decisions, particularly women's reproductive rights, Obamacare and civil rights. Of course, he will support Trump on all rulings connected with Mueller's investigation, but now that will also be hidden from the public. This is the direct consequence of the Democratic Party sulkers and Greens supporters dumbass boycotting of last Prez election and the last two midterm elections.
If we progressives shoot ourself in the foot yet again this November, then we can't bellyache when diabolical decisions like this extremist Court judge pick come to pass. As Obama said every campaign speech. Don't boo. Vote!
