(27,787 posts)you should be ... the problem is not gays, women, minorities, illegals, or liberals.
The problem can be found in the mirror. And with the right wing nuts you tend to vote for based on false xenophobic patriotism memes.

(793 posts)sometimes I listen to other white guys who don't understand that we have it way too well, compared to others and figure that they just want attention. They want to be a victim. A great big strapping cock of the walk victim.

To tell these types that they were "born on third" almost feels like a defense of the status quo to me.

(24,692 posts)They are just as happy to categorize people based on religion (Christian vs Muslim), gender (men vs women), sexual orientation (straight vs gay), nationality (American vs Canadian) or ethnicity (Hispanic vs Anglo) if they think they can scare us into thinking that the "them" workers have to worry about is not the ruling class but other workers who are a little 'different' from us. The ruling class is happy to divide working people on any basis that keeps the focus off of the "99% vs 1%" cause of our problems.

(11,816 posts)My dad was born into the working class, but he and millions of other white guys were forcibly yanked out of it by Uncle Sam and the GI Bill (fought tooth and nail by conservatives, by the way, and passed by a whisker).
He "only" made sales manager of his company, but I talk to a lot of his friends who are former CEOs, CFOs or even in one case a CIO (yes, even back then!), and have to imagine that few if any of them would reach those positions today with their poor backgrounds, heavy local accents and iffy high school educations. Not one of them would have ever been able to afford college on their own. And when my dad got out of the service, veteran status and leadership experience got you a lot further than they might today.
Plus the US was the only country not focused on re-building, and companies grew like crazy in the vacuum, and they could afford to hire lots of GI-Bill educated guys like my dad and his friends.
That window was open for a short period after WWII, and according to statistics, we're right back where we were before it opened, with little class mobility.
But we still like to THINK that window is opened, if only people just TRIED harder....

(53,778 posts)What a post. Thanks so much for sharing. That line of being born on 3rd base when everyone else is still lining up for an at bat is priceless. This needs to be seen by as many eyes as possible. I'm sure it'll change some perspectives.

(33,224 posts)Ours is the only generation of american men who will make less than their grandfathers.
This video is more of the same "man up" bullshit, intended to both sustain his "top of the mountain" self image as well as cultivate adoring fans of his enlightened views. He's whistling a catchy through the graveyard.
So you'll march if you find that you're 10x more likely to go to jail? Read more, dude. because you're a man, you are 11x more likely.

(37,573 posts)How the heck is a talk like that supposed to help anything, except his own "I am superior to other ignorant white guys" ego?
I guess white guys are NOT part of the 99% then. If they feel like they are getting screwed by the rich, or by a system that favors and serves the rich, they should just get off their pity pot and remember that they were born on 3rd base.
So that failed graduate student who was working at McDonalds. If only he had been reminded that he was born on 3rd base, then he never would have shot up that movie theater.
Oh, but he WAS off the pity pot. He didn't want anybody to feel sorry for him. He wanted them to fear him - to respect him at least a little bit that way.
I think you are missing the point and are taking this too seriously. I believe this video was made for people like Rush Limbo and most of the other far right boneheads who are constantly bitching about how hard they have it now that the stupid women and minorities insist on trying to have equal rights and to not be thought of as second class citizens just because of an "accident" of birth. How DARE they want to be equal! (That's sarcasm, in case you're missing MY point, too.) White men will NEVER know what it's like to be thought of as "less than" in in this hateful patriarchal society. I'm just really sick of it. My ovaries and breasts make me no less of valuable human bean and shame on the people who think they do.

(131 posts)I was just laughing at this old white homeless guy, thinking that he is a complete loser for not having made it. Don't let me get started on my white co-worker who is about to lose his house after his wife lost her job and his son was in a car accident.
I like judging people by their color of their skin, it is much easier than evaluating people as individuals.

(12,754 posts)He was quite explicit that white privilege didn't mean that you were exempt from having problems in your life. However, all in all, you're better off on average being a white heterosexual male. People in this country are judged by the color of their skin and, if it's not white, life is a lot harder. That's why it's always so ludicrous to hear white men say they are being discriminated against as a group -- which is what the video addressed.
