Fox News Says Gabby Douglas’ Outfits Aren’t Patriotic Enough

You had to know it was going to happen. You had to know that Fox News was waiting for a way to tarnish Gabby Douglas’ victories at the Olympics, and the folks at Fox have finally concocted a way; questioning how Douglas’ could be a true patriot if she’s not wearing the stars and stripes.

On last week’s “America Live,” host Alisyn Camerota speculated on how “some folks” noticed that the “famous flag-styled outfits” of Olympics past were replaced by “yellow shirts, grey track suits and pink leotards

Actually, I’m sure “some folks” means “Fox producers”, since no one’s been paying much attention to aesthetics. The Olympics is about talent and perseverance, not fashion, but what would the folks at Fox know about that?

Anyway, almost like clockwork, Camerota and her guest, Sirius/XM radio host David Webb, zoomed in on Gabby Douglas.

“You know, Gabby had that great moment, and everyone was so excited, and she’s in hot pink — and that’s her prerogative,” Camerota said. Webb speculated, “What’s wrong with showing some pride?” He compared Douglas’ uniform to a “kind of soft anti-American feeling that Americans can’t show their exceptionalism.” Camerota then pointed out how other nations, like China, wore nationalistic colors.

So now America should try to be like China? I thought conservatives hated communism?

This may very well be about color, but if so, it’s not about the color of Gabby Douglas’ outfits.

The others have the same outfits.

To be honest, I complained a bit about some of the uniforms this year. I mean, usually there is a cohesive theme to the design of all the athletes uniforms. But this year it's sort of like anything goes. I don't think they need to all look like flags, but just a general use of the US colors is usually typical.

I found it most noticeable with the swim teams this year. Both from the US and other countries. Some wore plain black suits, I saw one or two who had on these whitish-gray suits with orange striping (which swimmers from other teams wore as well.) Soni and others had hot pink suits they sometimes wore. Personally, I really didn't like the non-uniform uniforms this year. Especially with the swimmers. It does make it harder to tell who is from where when they are all just wearing black or whatever.

The woman from the US who won the shooting event was wearing what looked like a brown Carhart jacket and black yoga pants when she received her medal. It did not look good in my opinion.

But singling out Gabby in this case smacks of racism. The gymnasts all wore the same uniforms - which I saw them in at various times in pink, blue, red, and white.

Then you get people like the guy in Milwaukee.

I take a different view of the Republican party than many people here. I have met Republicans who are conservative, but not racist. In fact I've met quite a few because I grew up in a small town in the Midwest. In fact, the last time I was there (in May and June), I visited some of my friends and they were upset because some people believed that they were racist just because they are Republican. I've known these people for years and they don't have a racist bone in their bodies.

I don't agree with these people on a lot of things, but I don't condemn them because of their party, nor do I wish to make a blanket statement that all Republicans are racist.

I like to take people as individuals.

P.S. Most of the Republicans I know don't like Rmoney much, and didn't like any of the other R candidates, either.

i think she won silver and bronze in some things. and she got the gold for the Team competition.

but the individual is always special.

also i think the sport has gotten more attention lately and olympic stars can usually extend their fame longer and onto other things.

on various boards i have seen comments where you can tell the problem people have is with a black kid winning. and what i interesting is that it's not foreigners like Russians who were competing that are upset but racist americans. rather than be proud one of our own won. they would rather it be a foreigner than a black american kid.

i agree with the poster who said the thing about Obama being black also.

but these people have always been racist. they are just more open about it.

I thought FOX was all about rugged individualism? You know 'I got mine to hell with everybody else.' She's not out there to represent the bloated Cheeto eating slobs that sit there nodding along with the 24/7 propaganda network. She's first and foremost representing herself. She put in hours of hard work that led her to where she is today. It's her gold medal and she can wear what she wants.

First they don't like her hair and she responded beautifully to that "controversy." Now, despite the fact she won the all-around gold and a gold with the team and she's not patriotic enough because of the uniform the USOC issued her????

How about a "Great going Gabby! You've made the US proud" from these louts who probably can't touch their toes.

Gabby wore the pink outfit in the all around competition. The entire team wore a red outfit during the team competition. As a prior poster pointed out the all of the sleeves have USA with stars circling it on the sleeve. If fox really has a beef they should look at the swimmers outfits because as far as I could tell the outfits only had the manufactors name on it. some did have a cap with an american flag on it. Also the Russian Gymnasts had on these deep coral blue outfits which my wife said were beautiful but had nothing to do with the current russian flags or colors.

FAUX News needs to get a life.

Brit Hume was ABC's WH correspondent. Chris Wallace worked for NBC news. Greta van Xenu worked for CNN. John Roberts was a longtime CBS news guy, going back to the Dan Rather era. And Geraldo and O'Reilly made their names on sensationalist shit. Geraldo had his own crappy show and O'Reilly was on 'Inside Edition.' Many of their contributors were well known as well. Krauthammer, Krystal, Barnes, and Kondracke are all well known, and Mara Liasson and Juan Williams are and were NPR people.

On edit, I forgot Glenn Beck:

He was on CNN before Fox. He definitely took the nuttiness up a notch when he moved to Fox.

~~electronic touch-screen voting machines that are easily hacked and assuredly used to manipulate elections;

~~the continued disintegration of the global economy; and

Tue Aug 7, 2012, 12:33 PM
Aug 2012

There I said it!

I mean here is a young girl from a hard working class family who struggled to help this young girl to reach her dreams of being a top tier gymnist. Gabby Douglas worked hard to achieve her dream and that reward was winning 2 Gold Medals at the Olympics including best individual in the all-around competition.

So for someone commenting about her hairstyle? Really?

And about Uniform come on? A simple google search shows that not all USA uniforms are solid Red,White & Blue, doesn't make these kids any less patriotic.

What burns me is these comments are being made by assholes who probably schlep thru life sitting on the sofa blaming everyone else for their shitty life. Then Faux News catches on and decides they should make this a news story. Hey here's a news story - an avowed White Racist when guns ablazing in a Shik center but hell who cares because Gabby Douglas' african american hair isn't perfect as she tumbles away in her hot pink unform.

Tue Aug 7, 2012, 01:07 PM
Aug 2012
when I look at Gabby Douglas, the first African-American female gymnastics gold medalist, and remember the sacrifices she has made, sacrifices her father had to watch from a distance because of his obligations to our country's security, my heart swells with pride, for her, for her team and coaches, and for America.

There's no need to wave the flag. The moment speaks for itself.

But for Webb, it's not enough. She should have worn old glory, painted her face red, white, and blue, and sung the Star Spangle Banner while she took her final tumbling pass during the floor routine. Then, maybe, she will have met the litmus test for properly representing our country on the world's greatest stage.

With his ill timed remarks, Webb has tarnished what should have been a glorious moment, for Douglas and for America. David Webb is a small man, made smaller by his small mind, and his big mouth. Shame on him, and shame on Fox News for this bizarre carnival sideshow.

How my grandparents and my parents had told me that the flag should be seen with respect.

We weren't supposed to display the flag or it's likeness unless it was an actual flag.
That meant, no drawn flag likenesses, no flag clothing, and no flag patches sewn onto our jackets.

Maybe that was old thinking? But I still can't see people wearing the flag as if it were pants or jackets without it feeling "wrong".

this isn't about the color of her leotard: this is about the color of her skin and the temerity of her to accel and surpass in a sport that has, in the past, been the haven of little white girls.

all of the patriotism she needs to display is in the picture of her holding up her gold medal that she won for this country in the all around, and unfortunately, for these ingrates, too.
