Human rights activist: Candidates on Trump's Supreme Court shortlist cannot be viewed as independent

Human rights activist Kristine Lucius said on Monday that candidates on President Trump's list to replace Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy cannot be viewed as politically independent.

"I think all 25 people who earned a place on President Trump’s shortlist are not..cannot be reasonably viewed as independent and I think independence is what the American people deserve on their Supreme Court. It’s not supposed to be a political branch," Lucius, who serves as the executive vice president and director of policy at the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, told Hill.TV's Krystal Ball and Buck Sexton on "Rising."

Her comments come after Trump revealed last week that he has narrowed his list of potential nominees to five people, including two women.

“We have great people,” Trump said, referring to his shortlist. “Highly talented, brilliant, mostly conservative judges.”

The president has said that he will announce his pick to replace Kennedy, a swing vote on the court for much of the last several decades, on July 9.

...and in NO UNCERTAIN TERMS should be viewed as independent, as was Gorsuch. They are groomed to vote one way and one way only, no matter how much they obfuscate.

I'm not sure what Lucius means by "independent" but it's common for Supreme Court justices to have roots in the political branches of the government before being named to the Supreme Court or to have otherwise demonstrated a particular point of view.

It's a silly way to present the real objection: it's not that the nominees aren't "independent" -- it's that they have demonstrated through their writings or decisions that they do not respect certain precedents and are out of the "mainstream" (same as Bork was).
