"SNIP..........
López Obrador, a former mayor of Mexico City and left-wing nationalist who ran for president in 2006 and 2012, has drawn the support of Mexican voters with his populist policies, many of which mirror those of President Trump.
The lifelong politician, known affectionately to his supporters as Amlo a nickname taken from his initials has promised to crack down on crime, drug violence, and political corruption. He also has been critical of free trade. Politico notes however that, unlike Trump, he has traditionally been a backer of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
[Our] plan is to uproot this corrupt regime of injustices and privilege. The central problem is corruption, which is the main cause of social and economic inequality, violence and other ills, he told a crowd of 80,000 supporters at Azteca Stadium Wednesday, during a pre-election rally, referring to current Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, who has been plagued by allegations of embezzlement and several conflicts of interest.
......
López Obrador has proposed a policy similar to Trumps America First agenda, pledging to end oil exports by 2022, ending deepwater drilling, and reconsidering all current drilling contracts a move guaranteed to deliver a heavy blow to both the American oil industry and Mexicos economy itself.

(6,709 posts)In case you aren't aware, the current president of Mexico broke the state monopoly on gas production/sale (along with regulated prices), which meant--surprise!--that the price of gas at the pumps skyrocketed. $4 a gallon mas o menos...and this in a country where the current minimum wage is $4.50 a day. Current president is Not Popular for this, or for the rest of his BS. So sad if AMLO delivers a heavy blow to the American oil industry; Mexico's economy otoh will "recover."

(31,261 posts)I like his message about ending corruption in government and fighting violence in cities and villages. I think his trade position is more the common person is getting ripped off by corporations. His message is similar to Bernie's, with more emphasis on societal ills like rampant violence. I am open on the guy, I hope that he figures out a way to deal with the violence, although narco lords are pretty powerful there, maybe the trick is to get indigenous people more involved in society, their exclusion is a problem across south and Central America and Mexico.

(1,009 posts)misinformation being thrown around by his opponents. Im not really sure what is true. I just hope whomever Mexico votes in as President really does get rid of the govt corruption and drug cartels.
Mexican citizens deserve to finally for once live in a country without widespread violence and thrive economically. Hope hes not another wolf in sheeps clothing. I think it would be devastating and demoralizing to their countrys citizens.

(118,677 posts)that message. Maybe it is a threat to him if populism that is really against the powerful corrupting the country might bleed into a populist movement to stop gaming the system worldwide.

(1,009 posts)and it seems hes routing for Jose Meade. Considering Fox did actually try to root out corruption and cartels, Im assuming hes the most democratic of all modern day former Presidents. So, pretty interesting. Also interesting, I could barely find his acct on twitter search. On a regular day-easy to find.
